Mathieu outsmarted Pogi,
He held all the cards vs Pog in that situation.

Pog chance was to try and force MVDP to start the sprint early. Hoping that MVDP wouldnt want to let up the others either, but when MVDP had no problem letting them up Pog was kind of doomed either way winning against MVDP... but could have still gotten second if given a fair chance to sprint.

MVDP gambled just as much Pog in that situation and he was fortunate there wasnt a better sprinter coming up from behind. I wouldnt say that is outsmarting him. He was just confident he would win no matter, given the circumstances, and he did. That is all fine and job done from MVDP.

But Pog not being given a fair chance to sprint was an obstruction from Van Baarle. Criticism against Pog for that is just weird.

If Pog would have known others would catching up, he could have started his sprint for second earlier.

Clear obstruction because of Van Baarle.
Just watched the sprint several times just to make sure. As I said before, Pogi is done when he goes behind MvdP - Madouas and let Baarle past. Only way from there is the long way round. The line Baarle takes towards the barrier actually makes the only way for Pogi shorter. He was never going anywhere, so it doesn't really matter.

"It doesnt really matter". He was still obstructed.

Says a lot that we were discussing a race in March 2025 which occurred in April 2022. Pogacar is even criticized for displaying annoyance at being interfered with in that finish. He only complained because he knew he could have won that race if Van Baarle (who was never going to win against MVDP) didn’t get in the way. Sure Pog could have positioned himself better but so what he was within reason to express his annoyance.

Most noteworthy is that we can even have a rider who had won two Tour de France’s at that time who can be in the conversation about winning not only Flanders but PR. Flanders is a race typically won by bigger, more powerful riders like Cancellara and Boonan - not TdF winners.

Hard to come to any conclusion other than his detractors are simply jealous that their favoured riders will never do anything like this. As cycling fans they should at least recognize a versatility not seen since Merckx. Remarkable.

Personally I like riders who are capable of turning common cycling ‘wisdom’ on its head. It’s one reason why it’s a great sport.

Pogi haters coming out of the hole. Some of those are saying Van Baarle's sprint was clean but 2 years later are mocking Phillipen for slight deviations (correctly though).
I don't hate Pog. I hate watching races Pog has entered, because he seems to be testing just how far away from the finish, he can drop everyone and solo in. Watching paint dry is infinitely more exciting.

I wish race organizers would pay Pog not to show up at their races.

Touché.

This whole conversation started because one of the many posters in this thread who seem to think that Pogacar can do wrong made a post claiming that Pogacar reacted with grace to every beating he had taken in a big race.

Someone fairly pointed to RVV 2022. In that race, you might forgive his gestures at the finish. But the pro-Pog brigade rolled into deny that his actions after the finish line were in anyway impetuous or childish (which they obviously were). Not only that, they also claim that he wasn't beaten fairly.

I don't think even Pogacar himself would go that far, on either count. I haven't seen him repeat that sort of reaction.

First of all RR talked about 2022 RVV without mentioning Van Baarle's sprint. If you want to criticize someone, you better be fair and mention every single fact/detail. And of course RR didn't mention because he didn't forget that episode but because he doesn't like Pogacar. This is widely known here in this forum. Takes like "overrated puncheur", "luck merchant", "Giro-Tour is easy". Yes, for Pogacar it was but it is not for others. Froome and Dumoulin did a good performance in the 2018 Tour because they had a 6 weeks (an extra week) period between these races (he is always giving this example without mentioning the context). So listening to a forum member who has, constantly for more than 2 years, been posting comments trying to mock, troll or bash a rider doesn't seem to be the most correct thing in the world to do.
