It is rumored that is it hard for SA athletes to dope in SA but for non SA athletes it is easy.

Froome is either Kenyan or British.
Chris and his lovely fiancé both have lived in SA,
both have relatives there and still spend time there
so do you consider Froomey South African? That
would mean, according to your rumours, it would
be difficult for him to dope there, my learned friend.

Hahahahhahahah are you serious

The guy was always a climber, and one of the best youth riders.

Yes it is a serious question.

I'm not aware of anything directly, know his team history as a pro (don't know anything of his time pre-pro), and asked to see if there was something beyond that out there.

Finished 4th in the Giro during the doping era riding clean. In the new clean era of cycling he's not as good. He gets beaten by track riders.

Walsh thinks he's clean.

That was Cioni wasn't it ?

(2004 Giro).

Cataldo's best GC placing in the Giro is 12th I think.

Next you will be claiming he cycled round and shot Oscars bird in a drug deal gone wrong.

Of course that is up for debate. His father is British, hence why he took the flag, he already had the passport. But he has never lived here, and hasn't raced here much, very is culturally Kenyan and races with the Kenyan flag on his bike.

I have no real issue with it, he did what he did for racing reasons.

Technically as British as Wiggo - who, as we know, was born in Belgium to an Australian father.

The issue of passports & home countries is a slightly moot point nowadays in my mind. As I mentioned in a previous post - probably due to lottery money & BC support, and in reality more of a shot at the big time than (what might be seen as) the backwater of (South) Africa. That may sound like a damning assessment of where he was but in reality we know its true - the system itself doesnt help. Prime example (for me) is the UCI World Road Race Championship - the bigger and better you are, the more riders you can take. Not exactly fair is it?

Not that it will ever come to this but:

My daughter has a British Father and American mother. Were she to show any sort of promise, I'd much rather she move up the UK 'system' within British cycling than the US one.

Better funded, and seems a whole lot better run.

I can understand why anyone with the ability to ride under the British Flag would chose to do so.

National identity is much more a cultural matter than where you happened to be at the specific time you were born.

Wiggo is a Brit culturally, Froome isn't.

I don't blame Froome for taking advantage of the plastic Brit system, but lets not delude ourselves he is anything other than a white African who lives in Monaco (who had a British dad).

Froome doesn't get w-nkered so he's not a lad. And he knows nothing about football. Can't having sports heros who don't get p1ssed up.

.

Considering his parents background and how ex-pat communities turn inwards it's actually not unlikely Froome got an extremely "Brittish" upbringing. The quotations as it's even likely it's an extreme charicature of Brittish culture.

Especially since the African/Asian and even South American culture are so different these European communities become rather strong in their celebration of even the smallest aspects of their culture.

That's of course not to say Froome's upbringing is near what someone would get in England, but it's quite possible he and his family don't see it that way. He probably wasn't raised with African culture at home (would really be surprising!).

Oh and chances of ex-pats celebrating every national passtime (sports) is quite large. I have seen a documentary of Dutch Expats in Africa who were following speed skating religuously. And not just the males, no the whole community came together at the biggest farm and watched the races. Bizarre as I fall asleep as soon as I see more than one round :D

Ex-pat's... a wonderful research subject.

Solid points of course. As I said I don't have a problem with Froome riding under the Biritish flag, its just a shame he had to give up the Kenyan one to do so.

Will he ride the commonwealth games and if so for whom?
