He will probably score more points than Breschel.

Oh ye of little faith. Breschel will be back to his 'almost living up to his promise' disappointments rather than his last two years of 'completely not living up to any standard'.

McCarthy was definitely on the bubble for me, he's a good talent, but in the end I couldn't fit his cost into my last few picks.

I don't know much about him but I trust Riis to work his usual magic on Australians (he is the one that brought Goss and Porte to the pro ranks after all). Plus, he can shine in short ITTs if nothing else (won the prologue of tour de l'avenir last year) meaning he can get bucketloads of points in TT-oriented races like Durbridge last year (though probably not in the same proportions).

He isn't a TT'er. He's good good kick, very punchy, good acceleration hence he did well in that prologue. He's got a good sprint on him as well. He'll score few points but will not score anywhere close to Durbridge last season as he will not feature in long-ish / medium TT's.

McCarthy can also climb ok, but it is too inconsistent. Also he has a good sprint but last year at the U23 WC RR he attacked on the Cauberg.

Actually he attcked before the Cauberg, quite stupid move IMO, since he was one of the quicker...

I thought McCarthy will be more of a classics guy and he wouldn't be a good enough TT to win short stage races.

Classics guys usually don't give you good profit in their 1st or 2nd years.
i learnt that with Tosh Van Der Sande and Johan Le Bon last year.

That's the main reason I didn't select him.

Not all stage races have a 40k TT. Take Circuit de la Sarthe this year the TT is 6.8kms and the other stages are pancake flat. You do not think he could feature in this TT in a weak field and gain 50 GC points easily ? And it's just one example, I'm sure there are more.

I didn't know what meningitis was, but I looked it up and it's a hersenvliesontsteking.

Man, he better get well soon! :(

I personally intend to fight for another year in the top20 (pretty stable with rank 19 & 20 respectively) - a first update rank of 26 indicates a good start, and with 10 starters in TDU (a.o. Gilbert, TDG, G & Rojas) my team should be good for another solid result here. Especially hoping for a Sagan-esque showing in Tim Wellens' first appearance in Australia :D

Louis Meintjes more than doubles his 2012 score with 10th place in Gabon. My first rider into profit. :D

On to next week;

San Luis
Cavendish
Van Leijen
Hushovd
Finetto
Arroyo

TDU
Gilbert
Sutton
Thomas
Schleck
Farrar
Bobridge

Unless he's out with some African virus I'm not worried. I didn't expect much from him to begin with. He should be able to outscore Bongiorno, though. :)

No, of course, I was just kidding around :) Yeah, it was exactly Bongiorno I wanted to swap for Cattaneo but came up 1 point short. Next year it's 7501 points ;)

I know you were. I was just interested in who you picked instead... it won't matter, surely. Bongiorno could outscore him. You never know with young talents.
