After seeing how many people picked Brajko, I was questioning my reasons to remove him from my team.

Now, after seeing his early season performance at SL, and getting the confirmation that UHC will not race Giro, I dont regret that move especially having Schumacher and Hirt from CCC. I dont think Hirt will make the Giro team, but Schumi should deliver points what Brajko would if not more at 1/3 of the cost.

Edit: Brajko still be a good pick, but it will be much harder getting load of points racing mostly the US/America circuit

IMO, Brajkovic will get more points in California than he would have got at the Giro, and he will do some nice races outside the US (Ruta del Sol, Criterium International, etc.). But of course, he does need to get some high placings to be a good pick.

For me Brajkovic is a rider I like and have had him in my team since I started so it is more a live in hope kinda deal rather than a definite must have pick.

Well it looks like Bobridge turned into a decent pick, probably won't score anything for the rest of the season but a nice little early bump.

Thanks for the update!

Still in top 100 :D

Now I need my top dog Sagan to start racing and raking those points to keep me there

Woohoo!! Still on the podium (assuming it's one of those silly 5-step jobs).

...and cue the end of the Australian summer racing season...

re: Brajko, I still think he can pull in the results to make him a good pick. Even with the 3 major one-week US races (Cali, Utah - which is now HC, no? - and Colorado), if he gets 5th in each of those, that's 74 points each, so he'd already be in profit, plus whatever Euro races they get invited to (I think I saw they're in a couple of stage races so far, but don't remember) and things like Tour of Alberta and the Canadian races, and he's got lots of chances.

Anyway, on to this week's slimmer pickings.

Not sure about slim pickings - a Majorca stage win is worth as much as a Tour stage ;-)

Seems like I'm off to the expected weak start like last year and start second-guessing my picks and rejects. Well, only time will tell....

Riders that might or might not start in one or more races in Mallorca:

NERZ Dominik
THURAU Bjorn
VILELA Ricardo
BOASSON HAGEN Edvald
JANSE VAN RENSBURG Reinardt
MEINTJES Louis
MOHORIC Matej

This early into the season I expect nothing but everthing can happen in Mallorca.

Porte, Moser and Goss will watch Cadel ride into retirement while everyone else on my team avoids the Bouillabaisse.

It can't be very common for the reason you mention, but I remember that when I was doing the updates last September, greenedge was in the high movers in three out of the four weeks.

Must have been off the back of Matthews, Gerrans and Contador. Thanks for remembering, I seem to recollect that.

Totally forgot...

Green Jersey Competition!!

This week I added a tab (last tab on the spreadsheet; I will move it to the front next week so it's more easily accessible) tracking the weekly 'points competition'. Here are this week's points - no ties as there were in the first two weeks, mainly due to so many riders scoring.

Team Points Wk3
Vesica 45
Object 35
Armchair cyclist 30
nepetalactone 26
trackstand 22
PeterB 20
Handbrake 18
theyoungest 16
Roderick 14
ansimi 12
skidmark 10
Blues in the bottle 8
Yellow Knight 6
tom_jelte 4
will10 2

And the total top 10:

Rank Team Points
1 Object 57
2 trackstand 48
3 Kjellus 47
3 ingsve 47
5 Vesica 45
5 Ferminal 45
7 PeterB 38
8 The Hitch 33
8 search 33
10 Armchair cyclist 30
10 Lortnoc 30

So we're already seeing some separation from the top 10 overall - many names are similar, but guys like ingsve and kjellus who won the first week but are down in the 20s now in ranking are still quite high in the points rankings. We will see how this competition heats up!

I'm absolutely appalled that Patrick Bevin (1 other pick) is not riding the New Zealand Cycle Classic. That and the Road Nats were where I expected him to pick up most of his points, but instead he's been passed over for the rest of Avanti's riders. It's frustrating because along with Cooper he is there strongest rider and should have a great NRS campaign but points are not given out for that :(

I was trying to make up what else I could be doing instead of doing some actual work, and this little piece of statistics came out of it;)

I got an idea to look at, riders from which nations are most popular in this year's game. My analysis is not entirely precise and may have some flaws because I used 2014 ranking as the source and some riders were not in it, and I was too lazy to look up country for them, so whoever wishes to improve this is welcome to do so.

First I counted each pick separately, i.e. if a rider was picked 100 times, his nationality counted 100 times too. This approach shows, riders from which countries were most attractive to us. Here the most popular country is Italy, closely followed by Colombia and Australia:
1. ITA 12.2%
2. COL 11.9%
3. AUS 10.4%
4. FRA 9.6%
5. GBR 8.6%
6. BEL 8.0%
7. NED 6.6%
8. USA 5.4%
9. SLO 3.1%
10.NOR 3.0%

Then, I counted each rider only once, i.e. disregarding popularity. This result indicates how deep we went within pools of available riders from each nation. Here the winner was Italy again, with France and Belgium second and closely third:
1. ITA 13.5%
2. FRA 9.4%
3. BEL 9.2%
4. NED 6.9%
5. AUS 4.6%
5. USA 4.6%
7. COL 4.3%
8. ESP 3.9%
8. GBR 3.9%
10. GER 3.1%

Finally, I analysed full 2014 ranking to see what the distribution is among all ranked riders. Italy tops also this ranking, with France and Belgium second and third again:
1. ITA 8.0%
2. FRA 7.7%
3. BEL 6.6%
4. NED 5.4%
5. ESP 4.2%
6. GER 3.7%
7. COL 3.3%
8. AUS 3.0%
9. USA 2.9%
10. RUS 2.7%

A couple of my conclusions from all of this:

- We are in general relatively country-neutral in terms of picking riders to teams. We tend to pick more riders from those countries, which simply offer more riders to choose from (as the same countries top the 2nd and 3rd list). If a country has bigger share overall, we even tend to pick its riders more often (riders from top countries have 1.5-times bigger share than their normal share, with the exception of Spain, Germany, and Russia).

- Spain, Germany, and Russia are missing from the 1st list, which indicates that their riders, although represented by reasonable though relatively lower share of riders in our teams than their normal share, were in general relatively less popular. Russian riders are particularly low in popularity ranking, and to some extent also Belgian and Italian ones, as these nations improved their share if popularity effect was removed.

- On the other hand, some countries stand out a bit. Those riders from Colombia, Australia and Great Britain, which were picked, were generally among more popular picks. Therefore they rank higher in the 1st list, than in the 2nd. I don't think this is a surprise that there is some positive bias towards these nations among us CQ managers on this forum...

Well, would you look at that. One of my unique picks starting the year out with a bang. I can't really believe that no one else picked Stephen Cummings this year.

I think that Cummings was one of the first riders I was 100% sure wasn't going to be in my team :p

After Francesco Lasca's 15th place yesterday which earned me 6 points, someone told me Reinardt Janse Van Rensburg finished 15th today. I thought that was quite the surprise and was already counting on a 15th place sweep but alas, it was Jacques not Reinardt. :p
