The problem with Sagan is that he is very good at everything, but a great at nothing.

He also burnt everyone at TCS today well before the finish, shades of Cannondale.

Well, Sagan doesn't win again, on a stage tailored for him. In isolation, yeah he got boxed in and yeah, he was faster than anyone else in the finish, and yeah, losing 12 points and however many for the jersey isn't the biggest deal. But the trend is worrying. On the positive side, this could cause him to really try to hang in tomorrow to get the win, since he hasn't had one yet and Monday's stage will likely be a Cav-style bunch gallop. Tomorrow I think depends on how much the GC guys push it on the high mountain, the answer to which I think will be 'they're waiting for Terminillo'. So he could actually get more points from not winning today. Beyond that, the proof is really going to be in the pudding of the monuments. I'm basically betting, by picking him, that Sagan can repeat his results in most races (maybe a bit less in the TdF, and if he does well in the monuments it might give him lower placings at E3 and GW), but improve on his 10th/16th/6th in MSR/RVV/PR respectively. All it takes is for an ill-timed puncture for one of those to be out of the question, of course, but if all goes well he can top 5 each of them, I'm certain. His issue has been with winning, not with sticking with it until the end (except in Strade Bianche, of course). If that happens, he comes out maybe a hundred or a few ahead of last year. And then, he has to be a favourite for the worlds, which are in North America, which make me think the Alberta/Canadian races/Worlds might be on the menu, where he could of course pick up hundreds more. Still hopeful.

Sagan is not winning but he is consistent and thats what pays off in this game. He will grind to to 2000 points unless there are some injuries etc.

That being said, Styby looks good and he could be "there" for most of the big spring races too raking points from just about every race he will enter.

Hmm. I have that useless fatboy, and I have put a tenner on him for the Giro just to compound my misery. (Before the season started I may add).

With Quintana, Yates, Jungels, Hivert and Wellens in the break in PN today I was hoping for a bit more, but in the end Wellens made the top 10 of the GC and in TA Purito finally showed some signs of life and JVDB finished in the first group too, so today was okay for me I guess.......

Oh and Seb Henao of course :D

Talansky done, Arredondo done (in terms of GC), Betancur done (not surprised), Simon Yates done. Was expecting a good week but will end up pretty bad..

Well, the next week is going to be telling for my team at the top. Purito looked okay today but the real test is tomorrow. Sagan has looked okay but the real test will be next Sunday. I'll probably know a lot more about my year after MSR is over.

Glad that Porte saved my week plus S. Henao, Ewan and Berhane scored in Lankawi. Also good to observe that De Gendt is back, already in profit.

As unexciting as it may have been in real racing terms, for my team the T-A stage played out as well as it could have today. I was squinting at my screen wondering where Purito was after every acceleration and regrouping, and didn't see him anywhere. I could only cross my fingers that the lacklustre chase could see him come back and shoot away in the last 500m to pick up a placing, and sure enough, that's what happened. Not as good as I could have hoped going into the race, but given the situation in the last 5km it certainly was. Of course, he's in 8th, surrounded by mostly awful TTers. Cummings should pass him in GC, and in a normal world VdB and maybe Kreuz would too, but he could theoretically hold off Poels/Yates/Pozzo/etc... just seconds separating valuable CQ points for overall placings, he could end anywhere from 7th-13th.

Other than that, Porte won P-N, but of course everyone has him. Ewan did well in Langkawi but everyone has him. Henao and Guardini, who I don't have but a good handful of others do, did well as well, so I'll probably be below average this week but I think I'm treading water.

Re:

Points this week:
Paris - Nice (2.UWT)
QUINTANA ROJAS Dayer Uberney 5
SEPULVEDA Eduardo 5
YATES Simon 7

I did expect more from Sepulveda and sadly Fernandez DNF.

Le Tour de Langkawi (2.HC)
BELTRAN SUAREZ Edward Alexander 30
EWAN Caleb 127
HENAO GOMEZ Sebastian 115

Ewan did better than expected but hoped Henao and Beltran would be higher in GC.

Tirreno-Adriatico (2.UWT)
SAGAN Peter 56

I regret having included Betancur at the last minute in my team. He's talented enough to still get into profit yet I'm afraid he lacks the motivation to train and race.
I hoped König would be the second best Sky rider at Tirreno-Adriatico. At least Sagan scored.

No points from Mühlberger is really disappointing.

total: 345 points, unlike most who have Porte practically non from Paris-Nice.

Next week are racing:
Ronde Van Zeeland Seaports (1.1)
ZURLO Federico

Cholet - Pays De Loire (1.1)
TURGIS Anthony

Nokere Koerse - Danilith Classic (1.1)
BENITO DIEZ Miguel Angel
KÜNG Stefan
TEUNS Dylan
ZURLO Federico

Volta Ciclista a Catalunya (2.UWT)
BETANCUR GOMEZ Carlos Alberto
DOMBROWSKI Joseph Lloyd
EWAN Caleb
KöNIG Leopold
SOLER GIMENEZ Marc

positives this week of course Ewan, Henao, Porte and De Gendt. Also Wellens scored 70 points in PN for me :)
negatives, or else said, I expected much more from them than a DNF...Tom Dumoulin and Rohan Dennis...Dumoulin was ill unfortunately, seems doing well, but the bad wether stage was too much. Dennis peaked at Down Under and his Hour Record, but he'll get more chances.
In total already above 2500 points, I'm happy with that :)

Most popular riders featured on most teams. (not sure if I missed any)

HENAO MONTOYA Sergio Luis 131
EWAN Caleb 129
PORTE Richie 123
CAVENDISH Mark 117
MOSER Moreno 115
GESINK Robert 114
DOMBROWSKI Joseph Lloyd 114
GOSS Matthew 105
YATES Simon 106
DE GENDT Thomas 94
BOASSON HAGEN Edvald 92
BETANCUR GOMEZ Carlos Alberto Akuryo 83
STANNARD Ian 72

Looking at this list I would say that the most important so far are Porte, Cav and Ewan (you could probably add Stannard), while De Gendt, Moser and Dombrowski are obvioulsy good to have so far I am not sure their total scores will be decisive.

I am missing both Porte and Ewan (and Stannard) so needless to say I'm struggling a bit at the moment... But I had a small consolation in Langkawi when my unique pick Luca Chirico scored 67 points:) Nairo and Purito in Tirreno also gives me hope for the update next week!

Well, Sagan finally comes good! It's a double win because he clinches the points jersey too, so it's a guarantee of another 45 points. I think that means he actually had a better T-A than last year, slightly. Now all I can hope for is a podium at MSR.

Looks like the new update isn't up at CQ ranking yet, which is too bad because I had some time to work on it this morning, but now I won't have time until tonight (North America time). But I'll get it out!

Before Tirreno Purito looked like he would be the worst of the four expensive picks and Froome the best. Now it's a little harder to judge. Sagan is doing well, but I'm not convinced how many points he will score in small races the rest of the year. Froome needs to step up and podium Catalunya, otherwise he will only do a little better than last year. Purito should be able to break even. Quintana looks good and should score a lot in Pais Vasco as well.

Update #10: Freshman Class - big changes at the top as the season gets really, like for real, underway

There's a nautical saying to describe a tough situation in which you'll take whatever you can get, that is phrased 'any port in a storm'. For many participants this week, the saying was slightly changed to 'any Porte in a stormy Paris-Nice', as the third-most popular rider in the game got a whopping 493 points; if you didn't have anyone else who scored too much (although you probably had the second-most popular rider in the game, Caleb Ewan, who also scored a bunch), this is good news because it takes top points away from other riders, if not really getting you ahead in the game. But of course, this game is about not missing the right 'popular' picks and then supplementing that with a mix of picks that will work the best overall. And that certainly happened to work well for many teams this week, but none more so than freshman, who takes both the Top Scorers and High Movers titles this week on the strength of 942 points, the highest weekly total so far this year. Let's go through the list: Porte, Ewan, Henao and Sagan all over 100 points (I did a double take at that Sagan total until I realized they included Monday's T-A stage on the weekly rankings), De Gendt, Boswell, Mareczko and Purito over 30 each, and a mopping up of small points from a few more riders. A truly impressive masterclass. Barely any less impressive are the rest of the top 5 scorers, who all cleared 850 points. Check it out.

This week's top scorers

Rank Team Points this week
1 freshman 942
2 Blues in the bottle 864
3 zlev11 851
4 The Hitch 850
4 derrudi 850

The high movers list is, as mentioned above, headed by freshman as well, but the rest of the top 5 is different, largely due to the others already being fairly high up in the overall standings. Of interest to note is that the lowest fallers of the week actually fell more places than the highest movers, as one might expect in a week where popular picks score a bonanza of points and a few uniquely picked teams get left behind temporarily. I certainly won't list names here for that less glowing honour, though.

This week's high movers

Rank Team Up/down
1 freshman (+38)
2 merengues (+23)
2 LaVelocipede (+23)
4 Martin (+21)
4 sublimit (+21)

The Green Jersey competition sees a lead change after threatening as much over the past two weeks, but it's not one of the teams who were bunched up at the top last week. No stranger to the leaderboard in various categories of this game, The Hitch parlays his 4th place ranking this week into first in the competition by a single point. He's still got some work to do to find his usual top 10 overall haunt, but this should be good solace for now. The leaderboard is very close, as the top 10 are separated by 15 points (8th place on the week will get you 16). 98 teams have scored at least a point so far.

Points Competition

Rank Team Points
1 The Hitch 72
2 afpm90 71
3 jeroenk 69
4 greenedge 65
4 asdfgh101 65
6 Geraint Too Fast 64
7 ingsve 61
8 search 61
9 will10 59
10 Object 57
10 tom_jelte 57

The top 10 is a bit like the topsy-turvy 10 this week, with 3 new entrants and our first lead change since January. Newbie trackstand had a great run at the top but relentlessly good weeks from jeroenk and Geraint Too Fast were too much to withstand and so the top 3 flips around. Vaulting into the top 10 are will10, greenedge and Blues in the Bottle, and falling out are (sigh) skidmark, londonpat and search, whose Ewan-less team falls 13 spots from 9th last week.

Top 10 overall

Rank Up/down Team Points
1 (+1) jeroenk 3189
2 (+1) Geraint Too Fast 3146
3 (-2) trackstand 3119
4 (-) Object 3087
5 (+2) PeterB 3021
6 (+7) will10 2996
7 (-2) theyoungest 2975
8 (-2) asdfgh101 2972
9 (+2) greenedge 2966
10 (+9) Blues in the bottle 2962

Side question - I'm not the savviest of computer users and the easy 'hyperlink-on-text' option isn't on the new board. I notice at the side of the reply window it has a list of things that are turned on and off, and it says " is OFF". I've checked around my pr...n". Cut and paste to your browser for now.

Well I pretty much only had Porte, Ewan and De Gent with week with a smattering of other single pointers.
Not a great result but all ok for now. Lost 5 positions but still at the top end of things now which is a much better result than this time last year

Surprised I moved into the top 10, but glad I did, for now!
T-A will be a disaster for me, along with many high scoring stage races throughout the year but hopefully I can top 30 by the end of the year and feature in the green jersey competition.

Thanks for the update!

After a jump back into top20, I count on Uran conquering the second spot in T-A today, thus securing my most expensive pick some much-needed points.
I'm happy that all of the "obvious" high-rollers like Froome, Purito, Quintana and Sagan have started their campaign worse than expected (Quintana only due to sickness, and he's by far the best pick of the big names), even though they'll still scrape a lot of points together.
