Update #5: Manx Missile launches ironted to weekly top score; karaev keeps crushing it

After a flurry of opening-season races last week, things settled down a bit - but just a bit - with Qatar, La Mediteraniene, and a few one-day races. With not many popular picks scoring big, the week was bound to go to a team that picked with a bit more risky strategy. This is borne out by the weekly scores.

This week's top scorers

Rank Team Points this week
1 ironted 316
2 karaev 295
3 Schleckamagurky 279
4 Brullnux 259
5 LosBrolin 254

As I said, not the biggest week for scoring, but things are tight enough in the early season for some movement on the charts (see next section). Unique pick Mark Cavendish had a good week in Qatar, despite losing two photo-finishes to Kristoff, he got a win, the overall, and lots of placings points. The 40 points from Zakarin (7 teams) in Murcia helped too - aside from that, ironted got 24 points for popular pick Tejay VG, and a few 5-pointers to round it out. Lurking in 2nd place is overall leader karaev, who got 140 points from Andrea Fedi (4 teams), 72 more from Sam Bennett (15 teams), and 18 placing points for cheap pick Giulio Ciccone (11 teams). I'll say more about this team in the overall wrapup below. The teams in 3rd and 4th were two of the other teams that had Fedi, and LosBrolin in 5th had 198 from unique (and wildly expensive) pick Alexander Kristoff.

This week's high movers

Rank Team Up/down
1 ironted (+61)
2 Mellow Velo (+36)
3 Schleckamagurky (+34)
4 LosBrolin (+19)
5 MADRAZO (+18)
5 ingsve (+18)

ironted's week of just over 300 points is enough to move the needle quite a bit in early February - their team blows every other away by moving up 61 places! Schleckamagurky and Mellow Velo move up over 30 points each, and all 3 of these teams are in the top 40 so it's not like they're just hanging out at the bottom and had a good week. One could certainly expect teams with unique picks like Cav and Kristoff to show up on this chart now and then, as a big week for a unique top rider can really stand out.

Green Jersey Competition

It took me some time to get my stuff together on the spreadsheet front so this section hasn't been updated until now, but that's okay as the leader of this competition is usually just a tie between weekly leaders for the first few weeks. Here's the top 5 overall:

Rank Team Total
1 karaev 70
2 Hugo87 59
3 togo95 58
4 comodoro 53
5 Nicosix 50
5 shalgo 50

For those not familiar with this competition (or if you don't remember exactly), it was introduced last year as a supplementary competition to keep teams interested who maybe weren't in the overall race. The idea was to award points each week to the top 15 finishers, mimicking the TdF points for a flat stage: 45-35-30-26-22-20-18-16-14-12-10-8-6-4-2. In case of a tie, I split the difference, meaning if there was a tie for 1st the two teams would get 40 points each, or if there was a tie for 10th the teams would get 11 points each (12 for 10th + 10 for 11th divided by 2). Anyway, the leader of this ranking has the highest cumulative points on the year. As it stands now, it's overall leader karaev as well, with 2 2nd places in weeks this year (35 points each). It's early going, of course, but still there are a few teams scoring in multiple weeks - 45 points for a win will only get you a tie for 8th place as of now.

Polka dot jersey competition

This one's a new one, and will require an explanation. It's a natural extension of the 'green jersey idea', but gives points for teams who top the 'weekly high movers' chart (get it? best 'climbers' up the standings?) The points are based on HC mountain points at the TdF, and give points to the top 10 high movers in the following increments: 25-20-16-14-12-10-8-6-4-2. Same tie rules apply as above, and obviously scoring didn't start until the 2nd week since there was no movement the first week, just initial scores. Just thinking about it, I think this competition will almost certainly be full of teams that aren't in the overall standings by the end of the year, as teams that move up alot usually start from a place where there's a lot of room to move up. This competition should really reward risky unique picks, so I'm excited to see how it plays out. Here's the top 5 as of now:

Rank Team Points
1 Schleckamagurky 32
2 MADRAZO 26
3 ironted 25
3 karaev 25
3 Team_X 25
3 freshman 25

As there have only been 4 weeks of this competition, and by definition if you jumped up one week, you are less likely to jump up as high in another good week just because you're higher already, there is less separation and repeat scoring here. Our four weekly winners are tied for 3rd place, in fact. But look for this competition to get more interesting as the season goes on and the weeks begin to add up.

Top 10 overall

Rank Up/down Team Points
1 (-) karaev 1837
2 (+1) togo95 1729
3 (+1) Nicosix 1664
4 (+2) Ferminal 1618
5 (-3) will10 1606
6 (-1) Hugo87 1597
7 (+3) StephenC2020 1581
8 (-1) shalgo 1578
9 (+7) yoyokt 1575
10 (+8) Falze 1528

I've spent a lot of virtual ink in other sections, so I won't say much here, other than that yoyokt and Falze move into the top 10 while asdfgh101 and Magnolia fall out. But I do want to touch on karaev's notable team, as they've extended their lead with 2nd on the week. This team has most of the big popular riders, and all of the obvious 'high profitlow cost' ones (Gerrans/Phinney/Kittel/Gaviria/Betancur below a cost of 250, as well as more expensive Tony & Dan Martin/TJVG/Cancellara/Demare/Lopez). But also, their rarer picks are turning out well, with Bennett, Fedi, Petit, Dayer and (so far) Ciccone scoring some promising early-season points. Add to that rare top expensive picks Gesink and Vuillermoz, and this team could really have some staying power. Time will tell; of course, we haven't even opened the WT European season yet, that's still a few weeks away, so there's a whole season left to play for.

Meh, only 119th overall. I really hope for a bit more points next week but I fear that compared to most teams I wont be very successful again. Unfortunately Landa got ill, otherwise he could have been good this week. :(

And, while I have time today but probably not the rest of the week (on a trip to the backwoods), might as well outline my week to come.

The week that was had some points by Vichot, TJVG and Petit but not much to write home about; still, it was a poor week for many so I actually moved up 2 spots to 14th overall. I'm happy to be there with the big races looming (it's all about positioning coming to the tricky sections).

This week, I have:

Oman

Dan Martin
Meersman
Kudus

Well, I have hope for Danny boy to do a solid overall, and Kudus finished well in one of the Mallorca races so maybe he's got something - would definitely rather see him at a relatively thin HC race than something like Andalucia or Algarve, which offers fewer points and has more big names. Meersman has been anonymous but a) it's only February and b) there's no better sprinter on the team. So we'll see.

Andalucia

Vervake
TJVG
Chavanel
Petit

Well, Tejay is obviously a contender for any overall... the others, I'm not sure. Chav's got some punch and stages 2 and 3 offer the type of terrain he's attacked on many a time, but he can't do the 1000m of the final stage for any GC hopes. The others I don't expect much from, but I hope Vervaeke gets a solid start to the season at least.

Algarve

Kittel
Tony Martin
Valgren
Cancellara
Stuyven
Herklotz
Bauhaus

Well I've got a few guys in this race, but no one to expect a ton from. Obvs Tony and Canc are good bets for the TT and Kittel for the (maybe 2 but maybe none) sprint stages, and who knows about Bauhaus. Stuyven is gearing up for the classics and Herklotz is too green, and I dunno what Valgren's doing right now. So it's a big shrug for me on that one.

Haut Var

Vichot
Gaviria
Craddock
Guillaume Martin
Martinez

This race always is a bit unpredictable - it favours hilly guys who can attack or win a small bunch sprint. Obvs Vichot is a good guy for this, as he won 3 years ago; plus he seems in decent shape. Craddock, if he repeats his attack from Poland last year, could maybe do well too. But I could also see Gaviria surviving perhaps - well, maybe that's a stretch but it depends on how it's raced.

Also the Columbian Championships are this week - I wonder if Betancur will make an appearance, since he doesn't seem to be anywhere else.

Anyway, 19 guys in action this week (at least)! That's exciting, feels like the season is really getting underway.

Dropped eight places after a meagre week where only Navarro, TVG & Demare scored any points.

This week looks a lot better, and just got off to a good start with Jungels winning the first stage in Oman. I love it when my riders win the opening stage and bag some leader's jersey bonus points.

Should be some points to be had here:

Oman

D. Martin
Jungels
Farrar
Ciolek

Jungels already looking good, Martin is well placed for the Green Mountain, while Ciolek's result today indicates some form.

Algarve

Kittel
T. Martin
Valgren
Cancellara
Stuyven
Herklotz
Bauhaus

Martin has been mentioning losing weight for the Olympic TT, so hopefully he can challenge for the overall here. Anyway, both him and Cancellara should be good for some TT points. I want to see some Bauhaus promise as well. Talansky not showing up is a blow, he could've scored well.

Andalucia

Kreuziger
Vanendert
Vervake
Van Garderen
Navarro
Pozzato

The TT is obviously detrimental to Navarro's chances, but he's started the season well, and with some luck, I can have three guys in the top ten here. Curious to see what kind of Kreuziger we'll have this year. He's normally good from the get go, so shouldn't be too hampered by no racing kilometres.

Haut Var

P. Velits
Gaviria
Martinez

No idea what to expect here. Not normally a race for any of my riders. Would be nice if Betancur was here. Yannick Martinez has not really set the world alight so far. When I sort of picked him over Petit, I was rubbing my hands and saying to myself: "Haha, when everybody else are frustrated by Petit slaving for Coquard, Martinez tears up the French calendar and then goes to China and does a Mareczko!" Slight miscalculation there, it looks like. Martinez turned out to be a lot more popular than I expected, which is a good thing if he wants to continue riding the autobus.

Haha yes Fedi getting me to 4th this week. I'm expecting GP Lugano, Industria, Strade Bianche and Settimana Ciclistica before wrapping up the Autumn classics to finish on 1000+ points. :D

And now Coquard is out for two months, which probably means that Petit can, or even has to, race for his own chances as the team's next-best option. You never know what twists and turns the season can take, you just have to guess as well as you can and hold on tight. That said, going to China and pulling a Mareczko is something that still has about 9 months to happen, so who knows.

The curse of armchairclimber continues. This was meant to be the week when my bigger hitters came to the fore...but, after Tom Bohli's crash, now Landa and Kwiat are both ill. Don't be at all surprised if Romain Bardet rides solo through a swarm of African Killer bees this week. Campbell Flakemore's decision to retire looks quite brilliantly prescient now.

After a disappointing start resulting in a 108th place, my team shows first signs of life today. Vincenzo Nibali second today and so far a good place in the GC, I hope he can stay with the best at the Green Mountain (the same goes for Jurgen Van den Broeck). And in Algarve, Stuyven was third today, so his first points of the season, but more important, the shape is good for the classics. I really believe in him this year, he can score a lot of points. :)

I'm still regretting I chose Herklotz over Petit though.

Pleased with Nibbles win !

I don't have Tejay, and it's a trade off between him and Nibs.

Nibs wins the GC in the race which gives more points.

Wow that week was horrible for me. Kwiat and Landa who were my big hopes for the gc's this week both became ill and couldn't start, Tony Martin fell back in the algarve gc today, Cancellara and Kittel both made a few points but both are very popular picks, Rosa was introduced in a crash in algarve (at least someone in the algarve thread said so) and Daniel Martin disappointed too.
I will probably be in the worst ten players of the week :(

Ok I was slightly worried cause Martin bombed and Berto was doing terrible and Rosa crashed and lost 8 minutes and then Tony got dropped very early today. But:
Oman - Nerz 13
Andalucia - Tejay 106
Algarve - Berto 86, Cance 20, Tony 22, Kittel 46
Haut-Var - Vichot 140
These are the points I can think of, maybe I missed some but it's not too bad :)

Nibali, Kudus, Cance, Martin(s) and Nerz should keep me afloat this week. Hope Kwiat comes back soon and strong as I'm starting to realise who could've been on my team if I hadn't opted for Nibali & Kwiat. 'Could', as in, I would have missed most of them anyway....

Should have been a big week for the class clown... but with Landa & Kwiat blobbing on me, it was left to Bardet and Herrada to keep me ticking over. I only have three ambitions in this competition now 1. not be totally last 2. be the best of the "I haven't got Kittel" idiots 3. Beat at least some of the "I have got Kittel" sheep.

I'm going to be a lot better next year, now that I can see how it works.

2 weeks in a row as leader! WHOOOOHOOO! This is already a great year for me! I don't think I will still be leader after this week but we shall see. I have Tejay, Tony , Kittel and Cancellara but I was expecting way more from Gesink, Vuillermoz and Bennett. My big regret so far is picking Van Asbroeck over Vichot or Coppel. I'm not sure why I've done that but I'm still hoping Van Asbroeck might have some wins in some smaller dutch races...

Well, a mixed bag at all the races this week but I gotta say I'm happy.

Haut Var - Vichot!! That's his kind of race. 261 points already, that's already 70 or so ahead of his career best year at this time. He is in good shape, for sure. Also, Craddock got a few for hanging around in 20th place, which is encouraging for his form at least if he's up there.

Algarve - Tony Martin wilted, but him and Canc got me a few points. Nobody else in the GC though, c'est la vie.

Oman - not shooting the lights out, and I know Nibali is one of the more popular way expensive riders so I'll be behind a few teams, but I'm definitely happy with Kudus getting 50 points for 9th overall and picking up 6th on Green Mountain. I think he's maybe ready for the show!

Andalucia - Tejay exceeded expectations and although he couldn't get the win, those are some solid points. I looked down the list and saw Chavanel and Vervaeke picked up some bit points - obviously the mountains aren't Chav's gig so I'm happy with that, and a good base from Vervaeke is welcome after last year.

Somehow I got 17 points from Miguel Angel Lopez from a TT??

Can't wait for the classics to start! Stuyven, Canc, Martin, Chavanel, Demare, and hell, maybe even Cort will pick up some points.
