Okay, back home tomorrow after over three months away! I'm ready to start paying more attention to the last part of this game. Things are obviously going well right now, let's see what I can expect this week:

Burgos

Meersman
Kudus
Grosu

Not the heaviest lineup, but Kudus could finish quite highly overall given the dearth of overall contenders in this race since all the best climbers are at the olympics. Seriously, after Contador (who would win by a mile normally), the podium is pretty open - I mean, Simon Yates and Hugh Carthy are good bets, or someone from Astana or Sky, but Kudus on good form could top 5 for sure. But having only raced San Sebastian since the Giro, I have no idea of his form. Meersman seems to be doing well these days; Grosu has been pretty listless this year but I expect a good fall, so hopefully this will kick things off.

Utah

Talansky

Even thinner lineup - but if he's coming into form for the Vuelta, Talansky could top 5 while helping Dombrowski too.

Olympics RR

Miguel Angel Lopez
Barguil
Tony Martin
Dan Martin
Mohoric
Cancellara
Phinney

Well, I'll write off Tony/Canc/Phinney for the RR and cross my fingers for the TT (Tony is the biggest deficit rider I still have on my team, so he'd better start scoring!); Mohoric can't hack this distance, and I don't know how Lopez is on a one-day race but his teammates are strong so I expect him to work for them before podiuming the Vuelta. That leaves Dan Martin and Barguil, the second of which is my rarer pick. He didn't do anything in San Sebastian, but if he built up strong form by the end of the Tour and had two weeks recovery, he could be a threat for a medal for sure, especially given his relatively fast finish.

Not the strongest week, but I can hope for major points to be picked up by big riders that don't feature in this game, like Valverde.

Out of the top 10 unfortunately.

Vuelta a Burgos
RESTREPO, Jhonatan
VELITS, Peter
KUDUS, Merhawi
BERLATO, Giacomo

Maybe Kudus can do something? Meh, he's been a bit disappointing this year.

Tour of Utah
COSTA, Adrien
SANCHEZ, Brayan

Costa doing surprisingly well so far, maybe he can help me not lose points to the Talansky crowd in this race.

Dwars door het Hageland
POZZATO, Filippo

1.1 cobbled race for Pozzato could be decent

Olympic Games Road Race
LÓPEZ, Miguel Ángel
NIBALI, Vincenzo
MARTIN, Tony
CANCELLARA, Fabian
PHINNEY, Taylor
MARTIN, Daniel

Okay, most of these aren't going to do anything, but having Nibali is very nice. If he just does his thing and wins it ought to be a good week for me :D

Well with Nibali crashing in one of his main season targets and breaking his collarbone I can forget about finishing in the top 10. But at least now I can keep telling myself I would have had an amazing season if Landa didn't get sick in the Giro, if the MTF in TA didn't get cancelled and if Nibali hadn't crashed in the OGRR. :p

Update #30: Worth the Costa - 18-year old wins the week for Eric10

Hey everyone! I'm back on updates for the rest of the year. So, since I last was here, a few things have happened, including two Grand Tours, an Olympic Games, and a lot of World Tour events. We've got an exciting end of season coming up! This week, the Olympic Games RR was the prize on most people's eyes, but it wasn't to be for the relatively popular expensive pick Nibali. Nobody picked the gold medallist Van Avermaet, and so no one got that commanding 400 points. One team picked Fuglsang and four had Majka, but none of those teams topped the week. Nor did anyone have Utah winner Lachlan Morton; and although two teams have Contador, they didn't top the week either. It was a mix of high-scoring riders from a few races that ended up winning the week.

This week's top scorers

Rank Team Points this week
1 Eric10 799
2 Roda_na_Frente 634
3 the_fool_on_the_hill 551
4 Brullnux 526
5 togo95 523
6 Kjellus 512
7 Ferminal 490
8 adamski101 465
9 Ruudz0r 461
10 Slapshot 460

Eric10 tops the week, and got decent points from Alaphilippe and Dan Martin in the Road Race, Talansky, Costa and Dombrowski in Utah, Simon Yates and Ruben Fernandez in Burgos, and Senechal in that Belgian 1.1 race. Of those, by far the most lucrative overall pick is Adrien Costa, profiting 233 points on the year for a cost of zero. Second place Roda Na Frente took a different route, with Alaphilippe and Meintjes and another Costa (Rui) in the RR, Pardilla in Burgos, and four club riders scoring in Portugal. Third place the_fool_on_the_hill had Alaphillipe, Talansky and Dan Martin as well as the Yates twins.

This week's high movers

Rank Team Up/down
1 the_fool_on_the_hill (+24)
2 adamski101 (+17)
2 Ferminal (+17)
4 PeterB (+12)
5 comodoro (+10)

The aforementioned fool takes top spot this week in the high movers competition, while adamski101 (Majka/Talansky) and Ferminal (Pardilla/Talansky/Kennaugh/Geraint Thomas) round out the podium for the week.

Green Jersey Competition

Rank Team Total
1 Emericlabordure 229
2 Eric10 190
3 Jancouver 171
4 Pentacycle 161
5 freshman 159

With top score overall this week, Eric10 rockets up the standings to provide the most tangible threat Emericlabordure has had in months. No other movement in the top 5, but if you look at the spreadsheet you will see that there was a lot of movement at the top, with teams scoring points jumping into 6th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 14th and 16th overall. It was a big week for teams that have already had big weeks.

Polka Dot Jersey Competition

Rank Team Points
1 Emericlabordure 117
2 the_fool_on_the_hill 108
3 freshman 107
4 Eric10 96
5 ironted 94

Just like in the green jersey competition, the week's winner rockets up to 2nd place overall behind Emericlabordure. the_fool_on_the_hill inches in front of freshman, but needs another scoring week to make it to first place overall. Unlike the green jersey competition, there is very little movement in the rest of the top 10.

Top 10 Overall

Rank Up/down Team Points
1 (+1) jeroenk 11449
2 (-1) skidmark 11384
3 (+1) Kjellus 11282
4 (+2) togo95 11040
5 (-2) Squire 11020
6 (-1) abbulf 10897
7 (+6) Eric10 10862
8 (-) vladimir 10523
9 (+1) Kazistuta 10430
10 (-3) greenedge 10414

If you're paying attention, you'll notice that three of the top 10 overall are in the top 10 this week (Eric10, togo95 and Kjellus), so there was quite a bit of catching up at the top of the standings. Last week's top 3 were quite a bit ahead, so there isn't too much dramatic movements in terms of placements. Eric10 is the only newcomer to the top 10, while search falls out. But of course, we have a new leader! jeroenk did enough this week to get back on top, outscoring skidmark by 105 points on the week (due mostly to Adam Yates and Peter Kennaugh, riders they did not have in common). Will it hold? We shall see next week!

Spreadsheet at dropbox

And here's my week:

OTT

Cancellara
Tony Martin
Phinney

All 3 of these could theoretically do well, as well as a top 5, but the course is quite hilly. As well, Canc looked good in the road race but Phinney has just been training and although he says he's good, who knows. And Martin has not looked good for quite awhile now. Even a bad Martin should top 10, but I need more than that for him to even break even for the year.

Tour de l'Ain

Louis Vervaeke
Guillaume Martin
Phil Bauhaus
Lennard Kamna

Who knows how Vervaeke is looking in the second half of the season - he looked better than his points total in the first half, but has been off for awhile. Martin came into form in Austria, but can he hold it for the rest of the season? Bauhaus has looked good and could challenge for the first stage. Kamna hasn't shown anything yet but I think is aiming for Avenir so maybe he's going well.

Arctic Race of Norway

Sylvain Chavanel
Matt Goss
Arnaud Demare

Eep. A little thin here. I need something from Chavanel so maybe I can keep my fingers crossed that he gets in the right break in the right day or something. Might be a surviving, rather than a thriving, week.

Given their manager's shortcomings, am pretty pleased with my team's efforts. Not having Demare or Gerrans was always a handicap, but at least I forgot Tony Martin as well:) Bit of bad luck with Kung and Yates, though the latter is currently collecting points like a Pokemon Go addict. Backaert was just a bad pick, while Kiersbulck seems to have some sort of phobia triggered by 10k banners.

All my other unique(ish) riders are solid. Eiking is one of the lowest at 68%, so could do with a performance in Norway. And in a thin week, Battaglin is my only hope for L'Ain

Hmm, Hardy finished 2nd on the stage and 7th on GC in Tour de l'Ain yesterday, that would have been 50 points, but he got relegated and got a time penalty so he only scored 18 points :(

Edit: but... Sebastian Langeveld finished 2nd in the Czech Cycling Tour! I didn't follow the race, knew Ulissi was leading but didn't know anything about the rest of the GC so this is a nice surprise :)

It seems like a good time to check in on my team before the Vuelta ushers in the final phase of the season. I'll split it up into three groups.

Doing great - more than 200% profit (ranked by points in profit)

Marcel Kittel
Fabian Cancellara
Arthur Vichot
Michael Valgren
Adrien Petit
Miguel Angel Lopez
Sondre Holst Enger
Simon Gerrans
Fernando Gaviria
Lawson Craddock
Jasper Stuyven
Phil Bauhaus
Louis Vervaeke

Kittel, Cancellara, Gerrans and Gaviria were quite popular, so those have gone as expected (great to see Cancellara win gold this week, and not only for CQ purposes). Valgren, Lopez and Stuyven were all in the next tier of popularity, so not as much advantage as some of the others. Vichot, Petit and Enger have done wonderfully (although Vichot has been significantly injured twice now), and I think Petit even exceeded my highest expectations - those are really, really key guys for my team. Craddock was only picked by a handful of teams, so he's gotten me a good leg up too. Bauhaus has been promising but really doesn't have an outrageous amount of points, and Vervaeke's talent hasn't translated into his points haul - even though he's over 200%, he's only at about 100 points. I pick guys like him because I can see them getting top 15-20s in the first half of the season, but expect them to break through with like a top 3 in a 2.1 race or something. That hasn't happened for him yet, and he's been invisible the second half of the season. We will see what he's got in the Vuelta.

That's 13 of my 33 riders over 200%; lots of them are popular, which means lots of people have each of them, but this game is about having the right combo of riders, so to have so many doing well is always great.

In profit, but haven't reached their ceiling yet

Dan Martin
Arnaud Demare
Guillaume Martin
Merhawi Kudus
Andrew Talansky
Warren Barguil
Magnus Cort
Silvio Herklotz
Yannick Martinez

Guillaume Martin just got 4th in Ain, so he should really be on the first list, he's coming along nicely in the way I just described I wanted for Vervaeke. Dan Martin has been solid, but was an expensive pick, so he hasn't yet doubled his score. I'd love to see him do well in Lombardia, and/or maybe do the Canadian races, and then he'd be in the 'unqualified success' category. Demare won San Remo but has been sick or crashed at other key times of the season... we will see if he gets leadership (or even sprints against Bouhanni) at the worlds. Talansky, Barguil and Cort have had broken seasons in various ways, but Talansky and Cort have come on lately, and all three are set to feature at the Vuelta (I'm not sure if Cort or Mezgec will be the supported sprinter, but he could feature for sure). Kudus has been adequate, but a little disappointing considering how strongly he started in Oman. Herklotz and Martinez have been pretty meh, barely profiting on their cheap price tag.

Not in profit

Gianni Meersman
Tejay van Garderen
Davide Formolo
Matej Mohoric
Carlos Betancur
Lennard Kamna
Sylvain Chavanel
Taylor Phinney
Eduard-Michael Grosu
Tony Martin
Matt Goss

Meersman and TJVG have had uneven seasons but with some successes. Formolo has been invisible except for Poland. Those three are not total disappointments. It's interesting that my rarest picks (Chavanel and Grosu) are doing so poorly; conventional wisdom would suggest that I would need them to do well for my team to succeed, but that hasn't been the case. I still hold out hope for the rest of the season, but Chavanel's ride in the Arctic Race of Norway this week (finishing top 10 on the queen stage but losing a minute on a flat stage and finishing outside the top 20 on GC) is all too typical of his season. I fear for Phinney's future after seeing his horrible performance in the Olympics and subsequent non-selection for the Vuelta. I don't fear for Lennard Kamna's future in the long term, but he hasn't been an asset this year (maybe Avenir and the Worlds will put some dent in that). I was skeptical of Tony Martin's classics prospects, but was sure that he would have some race where he could place highly on GC because of the TT, and had the Olympics/Worlds TT double to fall back on... but really, nothing has worked out, he looks a little aimless these days. Finally, the less said about Betancur and Goss (failing to profit on TEN points!), the better.

Update #31: Vesica victorious in Olympic week while shuffling continues at the top of the table

This week saw the second of the CQ-ranked Olympic races, and popular pick Fabian Cancellara went out on a high note (was that his last race? Reports I've read seem to hint that, but I haven't read anything definitive). It's safe to say that most of the top scoring teams of the week had him and his 250 points. But also, relatively rare (22 teams) neo-pro Gianni Moscon continued to impress, taking the 1.HC Arctic Race of Norway as well as the queen stage, adding almost 200 points to his 479 point seasonal total (his cost was 120). It's no surprise that the top teams this week had both of these riders.

This Week's Top Scorers

Rank Team Points this week
1 Vesica 741
2 Team_X 705
3 hilltopfinisher 687
4 CraZyCaLL 663
5 Wallenquist 640

Let's go with an Olympic theme: Gold goes to Vesica, with points from the above-mentioned duet of riders, as well as Langeveld (94 points on the week; 42 teams) and Seb Henao (68 pts/8 teams). Silver goes to Team_X with the same top 3 riders as Vesica as well as Odd Christian Eiking (77 pts/7 teams). Bronze goes to hilltopfinisher who has Canc and Moscon, but lots of points from Sam Oomen (136 pts/5 teams).

This Week's High Movers

Rank Team Up/down
1 Team_X (+20)
2 Vesica (+17)
2 Martin (+17)
4 hilltopfinisher (+15)
5 EvansIsTheBest (+14)

Gold and Silver are the same teams, but switched around, but tied for Silver is Martin, off the strength of the same 3 core riders as Vesica.

Polka Dot Jersey Competition

Rank Team Points
1 Emericlabordure 118
2 freshman 117
3 the_fool_on_the_hill 108
4 Eric10 96
5 ironted 94

some drama at the top this week - freshman got 10 points to draw even with long-time leader Emericlabordure, but then Emericlabordure snuck in at a tie for 10th place on the week of high movers, and got a point to pull just clear and retain their lead. It's shaping up to be a race down the stretch; any of the top 5 could gain the outright lead with a weekly win.

Green Jersey Competition

Rank Team Total
1 Emericlabordure 229
2 Eric10 190
3 Jancouver 175
4 freshman 171
5 Pentacycle 161

A little less drama here - Emericlabordure maintains their comfortable lead, although freshman vaults into the top 5, once again pulling even with someone ahead of their team before accounting for that team's points - in this case, Jancouver got 4 more points to keep his spot on the podium safe for now.

Top 10 Overall

Rank Up/down Team Points
1 (+1) skidmark 11772
2 (-1) jeroenk 11729
3 (-) Kjellus 11564
4 (+1) Squire 11344
5 (+1) abbulf 11298
6 (-2) togo95 11071
7 (+3) greenedge 10922
8 (-1) Eric10 10898
9 (-1) vladimir 10854
10 (+2) search 10766

Not a huge changeup in the top 10, as only 7th place greenedge was in the top 40 scorers for the week. But points from Guillaume Martin on top of Cancellara's Olympic haul was enough to put team skidmark back in top spot in the see-saw battle for first place. There's a bit of distance to 3rd and 4th and below, but given that the Vuelta starts this week, that can change rather quickly. search is the sole newcomer to the top 10 (although CraZyCaLL comes 19 points shy of the top 10, jumping 10 places), while Kazistuta falls precipitously out of the top 10 to 21st overall, showing how tight it is near the top of the table.

Spreadsheet at dropbox

It's sad but right now I'm even surprised that my team is in profit. My four most expensive picks (Landa, Kwiat, Ewan and T. Martin, yeah I know, great picks  ) all still have less than 50% of their last year result.

I can't really complain, 24 riders in profit with 3 more at +90%. Biggest fails, Arrendondo and Tony Martin. Langeveld and Meersman saved their asses very recently :p Alberto should just about reach profit. And I will be able to pick him again next season :)

The Vuelta is a key race for the rest of this game, especially with a bunch of guys from my team in it...

Tejay Van Garderen
Simon Gerrans
Magnus Cort
Miguel Angel Lopez
Warren Barguil
Louis Vervaeke
Gianni Meersman
Andrew Talansky
Davide Formolo
Merhawi Kudus
Silvio Herklotz

Breaking it down, we have possible overall contenders in TJVG, Lopez, Barguil, Talansky and Formolo. Tejay denied it, but he's good enough to top 10, and if he doesn't he's good enough to get two stages which give a bunch of points. Barguil is about the same, I'm not sure about either of them. Talansky can top 10 or top 5 even, and he's been looking good. Lopez is a wildcard, not having ridden a GT before, but he's incredible so the points should flow one way or the other. Formolo I don't really know - he disappointed big time at the Giro, but I just read him saying the Vuelta is his 'main goal of the season', so maybe he's got GC ambitions? At any rate, he's stunningly consistent so a route with a ton of MTFs and no TT is perfect for him being up there.

Then we have stage hunters in Gerrans, Cort and Meersman. Gerrans is always good for short MTFs, of which there are several, and both Meersman and Cort are great at smaller bunch finishes, or even bigger bunch finishes looking at this field of non-sprinters. Like, really, when I look at the start list and am imagining Rojas, Bennati, Bonifazio, Drucker and Sbaragli as names that could be in the top 5 in the sprint stages, I think my guys have a good shot at a few stages.

Then we've got the 'dunno' crowd in Vervaeke, Kudus and Herklotz. The first two are in their 2nd GT of the year, and Herklotz is in his first ever. Vervaeke and Kudus certainly have the talent to go for at top 20 in GC, but maybe they'll just go for stages. But neither of them have raced much since the Giro so I don't know what to expect. Herklotz has had an invisible neo-pro year, but obviously has the talent to have some kind of breakout a la neo-pro Barguil at the Vuelta.

This could end up being a pretty good Vuelta for my team - the sprints are a role of the dice, and without dominant sprinters that also means that there's a good chance lots of breaks can stick, and I've got a strong breakaway team.

In Hamburg, I've got:

Michael Valgren
Marcel Kittel
Jasper Stuyven
Arnaud Demare
Carlos Betancur
Matej Mohoric
Sondre Holst Enger
Phil Bauhaus

I'm not sure what to make of this - the only sure thing is Demare. Even though it's usually a pretty big bunch at this race, I think it's too hard for Kittel, and probably Bauhaus too (plus they have the faster Bennett - but maybe they'll go for Bauhaus because it's in Germany?). Enger has a good shot, I love the confidence he built at the TdF with his team pulling on the Champs until he flatted, but again, are they gonna go with him or Haussler? Stuyven could easily top 5 in a race like this, but they'll probably go for Nizzolo. The rest are just making up the numbers.

Should be an eventful weekend and next three weeks, anyway!

Update #32: hilltopfinisher wins quiet week as status quo reigns before Vuelta points surge

Not much to say about this week; the Vuelta started but only had two stages, the Cyclassics race offered up points but didn't get huge scores from too many popular riders, and the other 1.1 and 2.1 races had pretty rare riders as well.

This Week's Top Scorers

Rank Team Points this week
1 hilltopfinisher 489
2 simple 411
3 Gigs_98 389
4 R_O_Shipman 377
5 Sasquatch 375

Not surprisingly, with the top team less than 500 points on the week, most of the top finishers were among the 16 teams that picked Caleb Ewan - his 220 points for the Cyclassics win were definitely tops for a single rider this week (Colbrelli and Roskopf, two other high scorers this week, were picked by 2 and 1 teams respectively). hilltopfinisher had Ewan, Kwiatkowski (one day in red, a TTT win and 4th place on the second stage), Meersman, Cort (top finishes on stage 2), as well as Enger and Valgren (who both finished top 15 in Hamburg). simple finished 2nd with pretty much the same combo of riders minus Kwiatkowski, and 3rd place Gigs had Ewan, Kwiat and Renshaw as main scorers.

This Week's High Movers

Rank Team Up/down
1 hilltopfinisher (+21)
2 simple (+16)
3 Crevaison (+13)
4 18-Valve. (pithy) (+9)
4 Sasquatch (+9)

The same top two dominate this chart as well, while Crevaison rose to the top on rare pick Colbrelli.

Green Jersey

Rank Team Total
1 Emericlabordure 229
2 Eric10 190
3 Jancouver 175
4 freshman 171
5 Pentacycle 161

No movement at the top here; weekly winner hilltopfinisher is the highest team to score points on the overall table, as their 45 points for the week move their team up to 19th overall.

Polka Dot Jersey

Rank Team Points
1 Emericlabordure 118
2 freshman 117
3 the_fool_on_the_hill 111
4 Eric10 96
5 ironted 94

A little bit more movement here, as 4 teams in the top 13 score points; hilltopfinisher moves up to 7th, while the_fool_on_the_hill gets 3 points (tied for 9th on the week) to inch a little closer to the two leaders that are still locked together. The top 3 are placed 61st, 45th and 34th overall, so Emericlabordure has the most room to move up and get on the top movers chart.

Top 10 overall

Rank Up/down Team Points
1 (-) skidmark 11994
2 (-) jeroenk 11909
3 (-) Kjellus 11660
4 (+1) abbulf 11492
5 (-1) Squire 11465
6 (-) togo95 11222
7 (+1) Eric10 11058
8 (-1) greenedge 11023
9 (-) vladimir 10977
10 (-) search 10935

As I indicated, not much movement this week. Team skidmark was the highest scorer in the top 10 this week, but at 222 points it didn't make much of an impact on the overall. A few teams swap places, but nobody moves into or out of the top 10 (although StephenC2020 got a top 10 on the week and moved up 8 places to 11th, 3 points out of the top 10). With the Vuelta rolling on and the late season 1-day and stage races starting to pile up post-Olympics, the next several weeks promise to be more eventful.

Flo, looks like you might be doing fine after all! Alberto looks great. And determined.

As for my team, the Vuelta has been mixed. Obviously Meersman's two stages are great, and Cort's third place as well. But two GC hopes, Barguil and Lopez, were among the first abandons. And Kudus, who is promising but I need more from this year, didn't finish in the top 10 of a very winnable break (although the optimist in me likes to think he was the second strongest but went too much into the red following Atapuma and blew up). Talansky looks stronger than expected, which is good, and Formolo looks solid as well; those two remain my overall hopes. As for guys like Herklotz and Vervaeke... well, if Lagutin and de la Cruz can win from breakaways, I've gotta believe these guys can make it from the right break.

But the big success for me this week was Chavanel finally coming up big. When I got him, I thought 'sure, he's older, but he's still strong and his results were suppressed last year by having 63 race days in GTs. He's gotta win a couple of those French 2.1 races with hilly terrain and a TT, and he'll for sure get tons of points from the spring classics". Neither of those scenarios worked out, but then I finally got a bit of vindication on the first one this week. I mean, Chavanel did look too old on his breakaways in the Tour, not taking turns and still being dropped from pretty unimpressive breaks. That was too bad to see, from a fan's perspective as well as a team owner. But it's good to see him get a bit of mojo working, at least. Fingers crossed for that to repeat itself somewhere before the end of the season.

Oof, and how about Guillaume Martin being with the winning break in Plouay but not being able to hold the wheel in the final kms? 112 third-place points down the drain. The roller coaster of the CQ game continues.

Not that this thread is lighting up with eager responses, but CQ is unusually slow in getting out their download - the most current one is still August 21st. Obviously I'll be waiting until the next one is out to offer the next game update.

Thanks for the update. I have a lot to learn about how to do well in this competition. My debut has been particularly inauspicious.
Ditto.
Pardilla has been great though, and Formolo lies in 8th... don't expect him to hold onto it but a top 10 would be great, without any expectations.

Yep, Nibali, T. Martin and especially Kwiatkowski drag me down. I knew I would be risky picking both Nibali and Kwiatkowski, but I never guessed it would end that bad. Apart from those three and and van Asbroeck I'm actually quite happy with my team. Looking forward to the rest of the season while already planing for the next.
