Nice points from Warbasse and Mathis. Mathis has now broken even for his points from last year and Warbasse is half way to his points from last year. Those were my bright spots for the week. I did not expect points at all from Warbasse so very happy for those.

Very disappointing that neither Felline nor Cosnefroy got any points in Laigueglia. I had expected two top tens at least. Reichenbach was sacrificed in Provence, Trentin annoyingly didn't do the sprint in Almería. But Óscar Rodríguez seems to be a good pick, Boom likewise and Gibbons is continuing being awesome and I'm holding my breath a little bit until the Green Mountain.

I still haven't gotten Søren Kragh, Nibali, van der Poel, Küng, Padun, Bakelants and König in action.

Update #6: Popchu in rarefied air

This was a busy week in the game, with several smaller races spread out across the calendar. As we hit mid-February and the game starts to take shape, there will be less upheaval in the standings, and indeed we see a successful defence of the top spot in the overall. So, how did the week shake out?

Popchu takes the week with a pretty good haul of 342 points. Their team’s most profitable take was from the high-altitude 2.1 race in Colombia, where the combination of Nairo Quintana (8 teams, 70 points), Egan Bernal (26 teams, 60 points) and Alejandro Osorio (16 teams, 21 points) was buffered by points from Kittel and Boom in Spain, and notably 58 points from unique pick Lutsenko, who just may be picking up a few more points this week. Second place is a tie between PeterB and Josedin, which is somewhat astonishing considering their vastly different lineups. Josedin is one of the few Kittel-less teams in the game, muscling to the podium this week on the strength of unique pick Miguel Angel Lopez’s 21 points, as well as a handy 91 from Ivan Sosa (3 teams), 60 from Bernal, 28 from Hodeg and a scattering of other points. PeterB, on the other hand, has the popular Kittel and Boom, as well as Trentin, and a few other Colombians in Quintana and Henao. In a week with so many small races, all kinds of combos can work to get you to the top.

This competition has a bit of a quieter week at the top, with only Popchu getting points in the top 5, adding to a previous 12 points with the 45 for the win to nab 5th overall. Notable achievement further down is AupaPyama, who has scored points in four consecutive weeks, but not more than 16 points in a single week, so their team is a bit off the pace in 8th overall, but still an impressive achievement.

MADRAZO enjoys the view from the top once again, defending the lead at the top with a solid week of 208 points. TheArt and jsg switch places, with TheArt inching closer to the top, gaining 26 on MADRAZO. Lots of jumping around a bit lower, as Falze, del1962, and Otoxiep87 jump into the top 10, while PremierAndrew, Londonpat and Googolplex fall out. We are still at the point of the season where the cumulative totals of the top teams can be eclipsed by some single weeks to come (eg. a GT GC week), so don’t fret if you’re nowhere near the top, and be happy but don’t get too comfortable if you are.

The hits keep coming this week with Oman, Algarve, Andalucia in the HC category, and Haut Var just for good measure. And then – what’s that? – is Opening Weekend just around the corner?

Didn't expect anything by Froome in Colombia.

I kind of did. Not so much in terms of CQ points, but I expected him to be better than this. UAE Tour would have been easy points for a Froome in decent shape. I expected a top-5 there. Not anymore.

I'm also not sure what to expect from Porte in that race, given his recent cold and sub-par performances Down Under.

I was very happy with Osorio from Nippo-Vini-Fantini though! 21 points he got. Interesting to see what results he can do for the rest of the year. Already in profit. He will have more chances to score points than Munoz I think. Both were cheap picks.

Would be nice if Lutsenko and Lietaer could keep their current positions in Oman. Lutsenko is an unique pick. Before the season I said it was a bit of an irrational pick and other riders in his price category are probably better choices, but I still believe we have to see a 'real' breakthrough season year from him, where he can take a good haul of points in the biggest WorldTour (one day) races and the WCRR.

If Lutsenko ends up winning Oman and does well in races like Strade, AGR and LBL (races I think he could be able to do well in) you could very well be looking at some profit I believe! Especially if he also wins some stages or place high in some other stage-races. I wouldnt be surprised to see him score around or above 1000 points. He is also turning 27 this year, so right on time for maybe his best year so far.

Nice 10th place for Fabbro on Green Mountain today, a very promising result. He is 13th overall now, but it could have been better if he had managed to cut his losses on stage 3. Still should be good for 30 points if he can keep his position on the final flat stage.
