Well I didn't have much of a chance to look at this week's lineups until now, which is a good thing because it's been abysmal - Ben O'Connor dropped out of Oman, and between Andalucia and Algarve my only realistic GC guy was Aru, and although finishing 80 seconds back and in the top 20 isn't a disaster it also isn't gonna get many points. So let's just ignore those races (other than to say my worry over Nizzolo has subsided) and move on to greener pastures.
Haut Var
Fabio Felline
Ramunas Navardauskas
This is the type of race I would expect Felline to do well in, but he's had a mixed bag - invisible in Mallorca, decent in Besseges, anonymous in Laigueglia. Ciccone seems to be going better for Trek, but I still think a result is possible. Navardauskas... well I recruited him more for the 'mostly flat with a TT' kind of French races, like Besseges where he sucked. So realistically, I don't expect anything, but of course I'll be hoping he turns it around any day now...
UAE Tour
Benoit Cosnefroy
Vincenzo Nibali
Phil Bauhaus
Remco Evenepoel
Daniel McLay
Bjorg Lambrecht
Mark Cavendish
Marcel Kittel
Ilnur Zakarkin
Kristoffer Halvorsen
Pavel Sivakov
Fernando Gaviria
Oh, THAT'S where all my riders went! Okay. Well, let's see... in terms of being a difference maker (ie relatively rare rider who I have somewhat realistic expectations for), my eyes are on Lambrecht. He was really consistent last year, and if he can be consistent on a higher level this year, that will be great for my team. Sivakov I'm interested to see what he does too, though he's behind both Kwiat and Moscon on the Sky pecking order, but I could still see him driving the train on the one mountain and ending up with some kind of okay position. It's Nibali's first race of the year, and sometimes he's good, sometimes not. Zakarin's a shrug emoji, and I'm waaaay more interested to see what Evenepoel can do against a top field than I am expecting him to get points.
The sprint field is intriguing. Kittel and Gaviria may be the class of the field; Bauhaus on his day can beat anyone, but is pretty inconsistent. McLay I'd say the same, but a few levels lower (ie capable of placing any given day). Halvorsen had a win in Australia so it'll be interesting to see how he holds against top talent, and of course we shall see how Cav's comeback is going.
All in all, a lot of riders and a lot of points available. Running through the list in detail, I don't expect to get as much as I might think looking over that bunch, but I am somewhat hopeful.
