It clearly wasn’t a parcours for bigger, heavier riders like Ganna and WvA. With regards to riding the tour: if the current top 5 rode the tour, they would probably still have been top 5.
Roglic finished 12th on a hilly WWC ITT course in 2019, over 3 minutes down from Dennis, 10 days after he won the Vuelta. I think riding a GT and going deep, might impact a TT more than you think.

Great win by Roglic. Not sure how much the course impacted on Ganna as Kung coped pretty well but Roglic was obviously on a super day. Nice comeback for Dumoulin. I think all three podium riders would be pretty pleased with their rides. With Dennis joining Jumbo they will be hoping for some TTTs next season in the grand tours not that they were not already strong enough for that discipline. Thomas and Porte replicated their late Tour form but at least they stayed upright............some riders obviously went out too hard and tired badly on the second lap. Not the easiset course for managing an effort. Asgreen probably helped motivate Roglic as I'm sure it was starting to irritate him.

Asgreen simply giving Roglic a taste of his own medicine.

So Cancellara remains the youngest OC ITT according to what a reporter mentioned last week.

Interestingly, all the upcoming TT/GC talents were bleeding time throughout the race. I expected all of them (except maybe Vlasov) to finish closer, to be honest.

I think a ITT on such a tough course suits the real powerful and EXPERIENCED time triallists.

Ganna was the youngest in the top 5 but he's also an absolute watt monster which compensated for a slight lack in experience vs the others in the top 5

Not against your take, just adding that Roglič also crashed pretty hard on stage 18 or 19 on that Vuelta, which surely also affected his performances at the Worlds that year.

Him fading on the PdBF ITT last year, is also reason to believe his performance today might very well have been a lot less exceptional in case he had just finished a hard-fought TDF.

I think this was the most impressive ITT performance i've ever seen him deliver.

You could clearly see the difference between Roglič and some bigger guys like Asgreen for example. Rogla was able to keep pushing in areo TT position on those 4-7% gradients, the bigger guys couldn't. That's why I think TT routes like this are perfect for riders like Roglič, Dumoulin, Evenepoel, I thought Porte would do well too, but his form clerly isn't there. Basically extremely areo riders who are also very good climbers.

I agree.

And it was still a course where the pure specialists made good results also.

Good race.

Sure. He actually hasn't won that many TTs, looking through his PCS results - 2016 Slovenian NC, Giro, 2017 Ster ZLM, Vasco, Romandie, 2018 Tour of Slovenia, Itzulia, 2019 Romandie, Girox2, Vuelta, 2020 Vuelta, 2021 Itzulia.

Actually that is a lot, but the Olympic TT is clearly the biggest one, yeah.

5th is still a solid result for Ganna. Form is there.

He got beaten by an outstanding Roglic and just a couple of seconds from a medal. 5 seconds from second place. Unlucky.

It is not like he is head and shoulders above everyone else in this discipline and everyone up there today is great riders. Ganna the youngest in that top tier.

Just small margins at the end of the day.
Yeah, he said that he's hoping that the next Olympic TT in Paris will be flatter, sounds like he and his coach really planned to focus more on the Track this time.
No idea about his weight atm, but at the Giro Dario David Cioni said that Ganna was 3kg heavier than last year, I guess that explains why is climbing legs weren't the same.

Yeah in hindgsight it looked like the others were suffering from their heavy schedule.

The part where Asgreen caught back up with him was interesting that maybe Roglic put in a lot less effort in the downhills and maybe that was a great decision.

True, but I just want to say that you can’t make too many conclusions based on the small sample size. There aren’t two batches of evenly talented riders with one batch doing a GT and another one not. Most of the big favourites would still be big favourites, riding a GT or not. The importance is also how deep you go in that GT.

All the theories go down the drain with Pogacar! :D

The two guys who went deep in the RR -- WvA and McNulty -- were off the pace; not surprising

I'm really happy for Roglic and Dumoulin. They both had to overcome a lot, physically and mentally, to reach the podium

Dennis is a frustrating rider.
I know Urán is kind of ninja, but he finished in the top-10 in the ORR, and was probably the only one trading pulls with WvA (also attacked with Woods and alone with 5Km to go).

Urán also emptied himself and cracked in TdF in a less than perfect preparation.

Other riders who went deep in RR, with not so good results in the OTT, were Bettiol, McNulty and probably Schachmann and Lutsenko
