In start number order for TDU I have:
Del Toro
Tarling
Welsford
Onley
Geschke
Staune-Mittet
Ryan
Simmons
Storer

Will mostly be hoping it turns into a selective punchy race where the likes of Onley can score well and a late attack from Simmons somewhere.

Very belatedly, my team. Has been fascinating reading the comments and already regretting a few of my choices and omissions. Last year was a disaster, so have tried to be a bit more conservative, and cut back on the number of neo-pros. Helped by the fact that there seems to be a lot potential bounce-back riders this year, and those that might improve at a new team? In the end though, my bias towards one-day/versatile riders over pure GC/sprinters resulted in quite a few rare picks.

Tobias Johanessen - Really impressed by his performances on a variety of parcours in the last two months of the season, when he was a point machine. The concern is he's likely to be Uno's main GC rider, which probaby won't be so profitable, but who knows? Just too much potential for me to resist.

Kevin Vauqelin - This could be a mistake as I'd forgotten Barguil had left, so he's likely to ride a lot of WT stage races where he's far from proven. But he has a nice French calendar to start his season and Arkea are good at maximising points. Hopefully, won't be a terrible pick at least.

Matis Louvel - Not sure what happened to him last year, but he's a rider I really like for his versatility and at 50% of his 2022 price, he was always going to be in my team.

Quinn Simmons - Having had him last year, I do know what happened, but he seems to be in a much better place psychologically at least. He's an interesting rider for me and am hoping this is his long-awaited breakout year.

Thomas Gachignard - Got top tens in Tro-Bro and Denain riding for Auber, and now has a chance to develop with Total. I like the watching the French and Belgian one-day races.

Loic Vliegen - Has got top tens (and wins) in a lot of races, and now has a chance to lead at Bingoal. I like watching the French and Belgian one-day...

Stefano Oldani - Much discussed already, and I agree with everyone who has picked him.

Juan Pedro Lopez - Sometimes you have riders who just stay in your team without you really noticing them? I'd forgotten he was there until I saw the TDU startlist. Not really that interested in following him and certainly can't take any credit if he somehow recreates his Giro 2021 form.

Bastien Tronchon - Similar, as remember liking his aggression in a couple of races, but don't really know much else about him, or what type of rider he could become. Am blaming both of the both above picks on nacking my laptop just before Christmas (so losing my longlist), and having to compile the team from what passes for my memory these days.

Astana:
Samuele Battistella
Anton Charmig
Ide Schelling

Can't use that excuse here as this is something of calculated gamble. I like all these riders and hoping for a bounce-year for Battistella, and the other two to make the most of increased opportunities. Additionaly, my presumption is that Astana will be doing a lot more points farming this year, and all three will benefit.

Max Poole - Came so close to selecting him last year as was already a bit of fanboy. A little concerning that he didn't really do much in the second half of last year? Unlikely to be a bad pick, and will be nice to follow a young Brit who seems to thrive in the high mountains.

And a couple of my very popular, less certain picks.

Ethan Hayter - Love his skillset and a potential upside, but as others have said, absolutely hate the way he hangs round the back of the peleton waiting for crashes. Likely to be a very, very nervy rider to follow.

Dani Martinez - Not sure why he seemed to regress last year(?), and a rider I'm fairly ambivalent about. Could have chosen Fred Wright or Hagenes in the same points range, so really hoping he can return to his 2022 level.

Good luck everyone!

You know all those young exciting, but fairly cheap, riders you had on your shortlist?
Whether of not you chose them in the end, they would be an excellent starting place for your selection for the Emerging Riders Game. You will need 18 riders, each with less than 200 CQ career points so far (there were nearly 200 such riders chosen as part of this game, and they are listed in post 6 of that thread), and a bit of patience, because the game runs for three years, with CQ points gained over that time as your score.

The time for sending in entries finishes when the TDU starts, so you have a little under 14 hours from the timestamp on this post. Good luck.

And now the men - TDU Roster

COVI Alessandro - So inconsistent but seems to have the talent for the punchier stages. But Ulissi has the better history here so he may be riding support this week.
GIRMAY HAILU Biniam - Mihkels for the pure sprints but Girmay for stage 3 maybe.
HODEG CHAGUI Alvaro Jose - Just hoping for a top 8 in a couple of stages. But i doubt it. They should make Der Bull work for him :)
PLAPP Lucas - Would be the man for victory if not for yates. Maybe they can pull it off like in the Australian nationals. At least I know Harper won't try and take his points :)
RYAN Archie - Is he there best GC play? Just might be. Come on rookie.
SIMMONS Quinn - I would like Mollema more here for Lidl-Trek. Not sure i see a stage win for Quinn.
STAUNE-MITTET Johannes - Suppose he is supporting Vader. Did nothing in the Down Under Classic.

Summary - Plapp for second. Ryan for a top 10. Girmay win a stage (my long shot preciction).

GIRMAY HAILU Biniam - Mihkels for the pure sprints but Girmay for stage 3 maybe.
Are you sure, that Girmay will work for Mikhels in the flat sprints? I mean even in flat sprints Girmay has the better palmares. Mikhels is still a complete rookie..

The article says nothing about this. Only that Girmay will target stage wins in the punchy finals and flat sprints..

Oh I am never sure about anything! :) I just usually downplay my picks so I don't get disappointed when I lose.

He’s already scored more points today than Pogacar got out of his entire Aussie campaign in his first pro season #justsaying
Early, but Pog then won Algarve afterwards and finished 3rd in the Vuelta later that season.

Also finished 6th in Itzulia and won California.

If Del Toro goes on to do something similar he will be one of the best picks ever, but if he just do half of what Pog did pointwise this year he would still be a very good pick.

Not sure what I think of Alaphilippes chances of scoring well in the GC this race. The way he had to give up in the climb when Plapp let loose does not bode well for his chances. He may be lacking the right legs right now. He was very active though so the will is there.

Good start to the season having del Torro, Plapp and Girmay (leading right now point jersey)!!
I plopped most of the top riders points into the spreadsheet to look. There are around 10-15 of you with that combo of riders. The early leader is Josedin with Plapp, Welsford and Del Toro.

Sadly I'm missing Plapp but there was no way for me to pick him given how little I've followed the sport lately. Can't wait until we get more races going so that the overall list won't be so dominated by Plapp. I'm hoping for my 4 colombian riders to take 1-4 at the nationals RR in a few weeks.
