I think it's about various TTs. Remco is the best on flat/rolling TTs but at some point below 50 kph (I don't know where exactly) Pogacar's assets (superior w/kg, better downhills) become more important. I'm not even talking about pure uphill TTs (where the best climber obviously wins) but about some kind of hilly TTs of varying climbing degree (and this year Pog showed ridiculous solo rides on such terrain as well).
But somehow it seems mind blowing when I say Remco is only the best in the world in flat TTs. I already mentioned, if we had 3 TTs (MTT, hilly TT and a flat TT) in a GT, Pogacar would probably beat Remco if we combined time.

It's not mind blowing, it just seems unnecessary to me.

I agree that in your example Pog would probably beat Remco on combined time but, as Berniece already explained, that doesn't make him the better TT rider overall imo.

TT's in Grand Tours (especially in the second and third week) will always favor GT riders, even when they are (relatively) flat. I think standalone events like the Championships are a better measure to decide who is the best TT rider. Well that and the sheer amount of wins and podiums in a TT ofcourse.

I really don't get why saying Remco is (as of now) the best ITT rider is a debatable take and why there is the need to specify it might 'only' be the case on flat or medium hilly parcours.

But I'm also not going to lose any sleep over it so I will end the discussion on my part here and leave it be. :)

Are they hilly? Since 2019 we don't have a "hilly" TT. And how many times did we have a really hilly TT? 2017 Austria and?

Is Remco a GT rider?

Is Remco a GT rider?
He said WC TTs are a better measure but how many hilly or mountain TTs did we have recently? Why Pogacar is the best GT rider in the world? Because he is the best all around rider in the world and that is the type of rider that should win GT's. If we have 21 pancake flat stages, would no longer be the best GT rider.
ITTs are an individual effort against the clock. It can be mostly uphill (up a mountain), flat, or a mix between flat/hills. What I know is in the first stage race (with more than a TT) they raced against each other, Pogacar won more than a minute. It's not my opinion, are facts. Can we really say Remco is the best overall individual time triallist in the world? I don't think so, and for that reason I said he is the best in flat TTs (over 49 kph). Under 49 kph, he won 1 out of 7. So another fact he is just the best in TT over 49 kph.

Next year there's a hilly WC TT. Maybe after next year you can claim Pog is the best TT rider in the world at that time. I promise I won't be here to specify that he is only the best TT rider on hilly TT's. ;)
If both Remco and Pogacar race the WC TT close to their peak, I will be the first to say Remco is the best in hilly TTs too (if he beats Pogacar). I don't have any problem admitting when I'm wrong.

Remco is the current double World TT Champion and the Olympic TT champion, right now there is no way that he is not the best in the world in that discipline and if I have to pick the second best I obviously choose Ganna which always came second.

I can put Pogačar as the third best but his only chance to beat Remco in a one day TT event is if the course is really hilly like in Rwanda next year.

The magic word is, 'flat'.

So i am guessing van der Poel is trying to squeeze out van Aert and was rather successful in the last two seasons in doing that. This two really are rivals in a true sense. Lets see if van Aert can set things straight in seasons to come. Two non stage racers to even be mentioned here is grand by itself.

How many of them are flat, mountain and very hilly? How many of them did both target?

If Pogacar believed he could beat Evenepoel in a TT then he'd have attempted to at the last two World Championships.
There are some specific conditions where Pogacar will probably beat Evenpoel, such as at the end of a three week race. However, TT's at the end of a grand tour do not define who is the best TTer, they define who has the best recovery.
Evenepoel is clearly a generational talent on a TT bike, and I don't think there's any parcours where you wouldn't put him as the favourite, apart from if it's at the end of a grand tour.

But isn't Remco a GT rider aswell? The last two WC weren't hilly enough.
