I always thought Aussies liked winners, no matter what the sport?

They like winners, but if we aren't winning in a minor sport, there is no interest in it. As I have said a few times, few people with no interest in the sport even know there are other events beside the TDF.

Next up: Wiggins to announce that he has bought himself out of the contract with Sky to join up with Garmin again next year, realizing that this year is the only year he'll have a chance to win TDF and that won't happen with Cav on the team :p

Exactly. You can do one (go for flat stages) or the other (go for GC), but you can't do both.

There goes Wiggos hopes. And a "talent" like EBH will either not do the Tour or spend a dozen stages doing leadout trains. Great for Sky in that they get 2-5 wins per GT assuming everyone does nothing but ride for Cav like Columbia, but bad for the stated goal of "a Brithish TDF winner by..."

really ? and I'm asking in a honest manner.

Why is it impossible to have a winner on the flats and a winner for the GC ?

Is it because the team has to spend too expend too much energy on the flats before they enter the mountains?

With the whole field riding against you - you need a team to do it on your own. You think any other team is going to chase down a break if it means bringing Cav to the finish?

Nonsense. Of course other teams will chase. That was just HTC's m.o. to not give a **** about the others and do everything themselves, but if Sky simply says "nope, we're not gonna chase" - you think all the other sprinter teams will just let the break go and let the French teams take 10+ stage wins? Sometimes maybe, but most of the time they won't, and Sky will just do what they need to do in the last 10K. It's a poker game, and Sky has a stronger hand with the argument of saving energy for the GC.

Which, presumably explains:

Team Sky's Bradley Wiggins on Cavendish: "I think I speak for everyone in the squad when I say that we're all delighted to have Cav joining us at Team Sky. He is the best sprinter in the world and has an energy and passion for cycling that is infectious. Team Sky has enjoyed fantastic second season and Mark's signing is another statement of our intent for next year and beyond."

Could be fibbing ... but that's going to be a difficult one to retract.

I think there's a difference between keeping your GC rider near the front, and having your team form a lead out train at the end of a flat stage.

GC riders and their teams will drop off the front when coming in for a sprint. It's too dangerous to have your GC rider up near the sprinters.

I can't remember any team who regularly contested flat stages and for the GC. Your strategy is not only different but your riders would be too (can you see a climber in a lead out train?).

We'll certainly see what happens next year but I'm doubtful Sky can do both.

I guess I'm going off of TDF history. I don't remember a team that contested both flat stages and for the GC.

And yes, expending energy for a lead out is energy that would be better spent on mountain stages. Plus, climbers don't make good lead out men and good lead out men can't generally climb well.

Evans and BMC were always involved in the Sprint stages. Next year it will be worse.
