All of the American Baseball/football plyers I've never heard of.
Carter is the probably the best rugby player in world perhaps? For New Zealand
Wozniaki world #1 lady tennis. I remember her from that weird press conference at the Aussie open where she claimed to have been attacked by Kangaroo.

Tyson Gay - Track and field but the rest no idea apart from Mcilroy, Paquio on that list.

Some of the names in the list just pop in almost randomly and I can identify 36 of them and follow about 20 of them.
#49 on that list is just bull****. He's useless. #47 is also way overrated
Cavendish is surely more identifiable than and marketable than some above him.
McIlroy>>>>>>Neymar

I can understand how European people havent heard about some baseball players, but the basketball players mentioned there are true superstars of the sport they play, and basketball isnt really an obscure american-only sport.

Personally, ive heard of all those guys except cricket, baseball and badminton (!?) "stars".

That list indeed seems to think India is the world along with some other commonwealth countries and the USA.

Basketball isn't really popular at all in Europe except in Spain and some other countries. But here, basketball is most certainly an obscure sport.

Anthony and Durant are relatively new basketball stars but I'm surprised people wouldn't know who LeBron James is. I'd say theres a dozen of the 50 I don't recognise (mostly from basemall, gridiron and motorsport).

Basketball used to be popular in Britain, in the early playstation days when nba games were really good. I can name Dennis Rodman, Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippin etc and i knew who Lebron James was, but its a pretty minor sport now. Apparently theres a british basketball league. Couldnt mention a single team in it.

i couldnt tell you who the current nba champions were, but then again, i couldnt tell you who won the world series last year either, or the nhl champions. But then I dont suppose many Americans could say who won the FA Cup last year, or who the Australian Rules Football champions are.

LeBron James I know even though I never watch basketball. But he wasn't on the list TSF listed.

Ryo Ishikawa is another random name. I know that he is very talented and was affected very hard by the tsunami in Japan earlier this year but that doesn't make him more marketable than anyone on the list. Even #49 is more marketable than him.

Spains paralympic basketball team were very good - won Olympic gold despite being found later to be able bodied lol.

India have a huge population of cricket mad people so thats not surprising to see a couple them on the list.

It's not a surprise. India has a billion people that worship Dhoni and cricket, whilst the North American market isn't diluted by language and nationality making it easier to market people.

Neymar is the 3rd most marketable footballer in the world?

I think it is because he is expected to be the next big thing. Hence the 11 year nike deal. No wonder he behaves like a spoilt brat

But how many of these people are economically interesting to companies for the next 10 years?

I've been to India and the gap between the rich and poor is immensely big. And the poor people are by far a majority in India.

Making my point. Someone else looked at the top 10 and didn't recognise James.

Full list

I think the only coverage of the NBA nowadays in the UK is on ESPN which can't help with its popularity but I think its having a resurgence. GB's team is as strong as its been in living memory and participation is on the increase. There have been NBA teams playing on a fairly frequent basis in the UK over the last few years and I believe the basketball Olympics tickets were oversubscribed.

Much like China companies are extremely interested in India. The potential is huge with a population of almost 1.2 billion and growing it doesn't matter if only 1/4 of the population are middle class because that is still similar to the population of Europe.

You don't realise how massive cricket is here. It's commonplace for a man to buy a TV in a village and the whole village watches the match.
Also the marketing these cricketers do covers everything, from hot chocolate to motorbikes (not the fancy ones but as you would have seen small ones) and they don't become brand ambassadors for Ferrari.

I dont know much about whats marketable around the world. But if your high on that list you should be high on the earnings lists to..or? I saw a list Forbes made about athletes (top 50 I think), I didnt memorize it( :p ), but Im pretty sure a lot of the tops from the Forbes-list isnt mentioned on the list you guys are talking about.

Exactly ;)

1 European has the purchasing power of a lot of Indian people.
