Matthews has 1 win and 17 top 10s out of 41 races of 250+k. His win was 8 years ago in the Giro, where he beat Wellens and Evans in a sprint of 4.

so Philippe Gilbert would deserve 5 stars, according to that logic?

I really just can't see any other I'd rate higher. There's a dozen of riders who can win this, of course, and who had great results in the past, but they are all long shots on this course (or in this shape), and need the race to go exactly their way. I'd always give someone who is very likely to finish top ~5 more stars

Have you talked about all the corners and positioning? Looked like that could well be some factor to me, but then I only watched the races a bit.

Well he's been very good this year, many ones and twos and like we saw in the Tour in Mende. Good pick imho.

What I'm trying to figure out is, if Magnus Cort could be placed into the same scenario as how Fedorov did it in espoirs, possible? It is I think, he's got the qualities for exactly the same type of hijack.

Or maybe it's Lutsenko, afterall every cyclist needs a new jersey, at least once in a ten years.

I rate Matthews in the 8 to 12 range - He could struggle with the steepness of the climb, however he may try to go with 2 laps to go.

That doesn’t sound like Matthews.

That said, think he will do well.

For me on the pacific time zone it starts at 5:05PM and finishes around 12:30AM to 1:30AM thinking from the other races around 12:45AM or 1AM So I can watch all except for taking Nephew to work and picking him up from work and of course using the little boys room LOL. Great for me though I wish the race started about an hour earlier

Couldn’t agree more. Such a nice change to watch earlier portions of the race without having to be up at 5:00am! I started to get sleepy watching the women last night, but then the last two laps when things exploded out was out of seat.

Probably. I watched the U23 race in my cellphone and took me a while to understand that it was Fedorov and not a dutch guy who was attacking from head on shots, all while trying to see where was Kooij.

Yeah but Matthews does have an excellent record in the worlds road race.

Sure the others made tactical mistakes.

But the attack in the final km was masterclass from Van Vleuten.

She let go of the group to come with more speed far over to the right.

The others would have had to react immediately but even half a second of hesitation was too much and she was gone for the win.

But it was multiple seconds. The front group seemed to just watch her as she zoomed past. I even thought it was deliberate that they were letting her go. Coz she's AVV with a broken elbow and all.

Lotte Kopecky can bang her handlebars as much as she likes but for her sake I hope the emotion was directed at herself.
