I don't believe they offered Evenepoel more money. If they did offer him significantly more than his current $5M/yr, then I do think Remco would be wise to have accepted it. You only have so many years to make profit from your talents as a sportsperson.

But listen to yourself --- you're suggesting a high profile dispute and buying oneself out of a contract in order to make less money somewhere else? No, that's ridiculous, clearly van Gils has to have been offered more money, and since someone bought out his old contract on top of his new contract, it suggests the old contract was severely undervaluing him.

In case of Van Gils it was about Bora v. Astana. I think both of them offered much more money than Lotto is doing now. But I'm saying that if Bora offered 2M, and Astana offered 2.2M, it would still make sense to chose Bora since the likelihood to achieve better results are higher there.

Also in case of Evenepoel, he's earning 5M, including bonuses. While Bora would have offered him a high base salary by default, and on top of that bonus.

I see, I assumed you were making a moral judgment about people seeking money. Still, everything in this post is completely speculative. We have no way of knowing the salaries or the split between base and bonus for any contract, especially not the hypothetical unsigned contract.

If you go to Bora you may get better technical support leading to better results, which would further raise your future contract value and make it easier to earn contract bonuses. So that may actually be the more lucrative option. But if you go to Astana you probably have more chances as a leader. And if the salary actually is higher, you could use it for your own trips to the wind tunnel etc. It's not obvious which is better for a rider's career, even to those who have more information than us with which to inform predictions (such as the rider or his advisors).

Sabgal is expected to announce Ruben Fernandez and Harrison Wood as well, though numbers don't really add up.

They reported 14 riders on next season roster and have already announced 10 riders, with three more allegedly had signed last season until 2025 acording to press news from the team (Baptista, Nych and García), so they should only have room for one more rider. I'm also surprised they are letting Bregnhoj go.

Demotions in sight at Astana. Not only Santiago Umba (as anticipated by Samamba) has been demoted to the feeder team, but also Daniil Marukhin. That leaves spaces for Van Gils (hope is not the case) and / or any other late signing by the team.

PS: It seems Pesenti joins Soudal Devo. Not what I expected when Ukyo manager announced all the italian riders of the team had found pro contracts, but probably a good move for him.

From what I've heard Kuzmin (also according to Benson) has extended and Toneatti will move up from the devo team so it has nothing to do with Van Gils. Astana tried again after it was clear he was leaving after all but got a quick no as far as I know. I was under the impression it was basically 99% sure he was going to Red Bull, but the official confirmations takes longer than I thought. Maybe Ineos is really trying with Pidcock leaving back on the cards. We'll know soon. Teams will want him on their training camp.

Cheers, just read the statement. He's got nothing left to prove in MTB, and won't win another CX Worlds while MVDP is around, whereas potentially, he could be a much more successful road rider than he's been so far. Looks like he's just decided that he wants to keep on doing what he enjoys the most?

BTW, wasn't Cummings let go as a DS because he didn't get along with Pidcock? Or maybe that's just what it appeared like at the time, and in reality he'd simply been offered a job by Jayco.


(BTW, I can't believe I just had to write Cummings and Pidcock in the same sentence...
Please don't report me! It's their names, they can't help it... neither can I...)
