non load bearing training is good for him as part of his PT regimen and fitness but it is evident he still carries issues with walking. Still, It's quite encouraging to see him optimistic about his chances to return this year (doubtful)

I really hope that Egan's recovery is not rushed, he should have all the time at his disposal to recover from such a nasty set of injuries.

I just heard yesterday from a a news media outlet in Colombia that Bernal will travel to Europe in a few weeks to assess his recovery. Specifically to France where Ineos have some experts in the matter.
Maybe they are worried that he is going to fast. But what about the trip?? LOL.
Anyway, his progression looks promising nevertheless.

So how do professional cycling contracts work? If Bernal were not to race all season, would he still be paid? Does he have to have so many race days to meet the terms of his contract? Do teams routinely carry insurance on riders in case they are hurt and need to be paid even though they don't have any results?
I assume it varies on your importance to the team, but what about the superstars like Bernal? I would assume there might be a standard approach for them?
It really doesn't seem likely that he could be competitive this season, but who knows ... maybe he is the real superman.

Yes, he will still be paid. I don't know if they have an insurance.

Holm spoke about in a recent podcast than teams legally can reduce the wage by 50% (or something similar) for riders who haven't been available for 3 months or so. Cant remember the exact specifics, but it was discussed due to the Bennett-incident last year where Lefevre wanted to charge him, but apparently couldn't since he was writing EC or some other race.

Yes, but that was a different case where they wanted to get rid of him. I doubt Ineos would antagonise Bernal like that.

Egan's recovery is outstanding 
Will he be able to "race" this year? maybe. Hope he's not rushed to do so, and IG gives him ample time for it, since it's more than his injuries - His fitness & racing form have to be developed again.

I was listening to a podcast and they were reading a tweet from a sports commentator that he was doing the Vuelta this year. Maybe was a joke at how fast his recovery was going or I wasn't sure whether to take seriously. They said to take it with a big grain of salt. But they commented it anyway. Weird!

Too early Rick. Lets see where hes at in 1 month, they might just go with the slow build towards the Vuelta. That should be the most sensible to do, unless hes recovering a lot better than expected I think.
Great to see Bernal on the bike again doing some light training.

Afterwards, he, IMHO, should concentrate on one-day races. If he wins Vuelta, it cannot get any better in stage races. So he should try to win Liege and Lombardia.
He has an impressive palmares in the monuments already: rode three times Lombardia, and finished (2017-2019) in ranks 13, 12 and 3. That shows that he has been (and hopefully is) a potential winner of Liege and Lombardia.
