He has won 7 Tours during a period where savoldelli won the giro and aitor gonzales won the vuelta. The field in the tour was the most competitive ever.
Mercxx has been unable to win 6 Tours and was not very dominant in the mountains.
Idem for Hinault and he was litteraly humiliated by Fignon in 84.
IMO, only Coppi and maybe contador (if he improve his TT, but with Riis he has a chance) in the future can contest him this title.

Seattleallstar said:--SNIP--. Regrettably by time he got around to Contador he was only a shell of his former self which still dominates all cyclists alive with the exception of 1 or 3
Angliru said:He hasn't won jack since his return with the exception of a mountain bike race in the U.S. NO WINS IN EUROPE SINCE HIS RETURN. Nada. Hardly call that "still dominates all cyclists alive".
It could be argued that Indurain was at least his equal with 5 straight Tour wins coupled with 2 years that he won the Giro AND the Tour--in consecutive years! Plus Olympic and WC titles in the ITT included in his list of successes.

BroDeal said:That was the TdF that Vaughters said was soft pedaled. Even Wigans managed a top five. That says everything right there.
We saw this year what Armstrong is like without his special preparation. It was not impressive, not impressive at all.

That says everything right there.
But of course Eddy ist the greatest of all times and will always be !
Mellow Velo said:No he didn't. Selective dementia kicking in again?
He prep was severely disrupted, through even more crashes and an upset stomach, which led to him having to add Luxembourg to his programme.
What are these very good results you speak of?
I take it you are referring to Switzerland, where he finished 44th in the prologue, 11th in the ITT and 7th in the only serious mountain stage, which somehow led to him getting 2nd overall.
I recall fanboys getting all excited about that one and writing off Andy Schleck's chances at the same time, because he couldn't stay with Lance on the big climb. Even the fanboys know why, now.
When Lance finally got to riding, everybody else had gone into training mode.![]()
Mellow Velo said:The reason I cut out your "response" to the Astana soft pedalling in 2009 suggestion, is because it has nothing to do with the claim that he had prepared well in 2010.
If you have an issue with the soft pedalling allegation, take it up with JV.
I am undecided on the point.
Does 4th in the PL count as preparation? Certainly a good result, but IMO, outside the scope of your claim.
