Didn't real Madrid win the champions league literally the season after he left?

Both have had a huge success early in their carreer with a young, low-budget squad (Mourinho-Porto, Van Gaal-Ajax). Both then went on to assemble around them a large group of obedient "yes" men who lack the balls and vision to point out obvious flaws in their tactics and people management.
Both seem rather stereotype examples of people who don't allow for, or know how to deal with, criticism.

Completely agree with the comment regarding criticism. However Mourinho has had continued success from when he took over Porto. He's won league titles in Portugal, England, Italy and Spain as well as domestic cup competitions in each of those countries. Champions league titles with 2 clubs and a UEFA cup with Porto.
That's kind of like saying David Cameron must be right on everything because people voted for him.Whilst I know he does have flaws and is not everyone's cup of tea there is a reason most Man United fans I know, and I know a great deal of them from my age group, are absolutely desperate for Mourinho to take over at Old Trafford.

Amster, nice to see a young Hammer get recognition for what he does.
One of the more worthy on the honours list
