Also said he couldn't even ride 300 watts anymore in the last 10k btw. And he said it wasn't from eating. Just the cold and the long solo

Not wearing a jacket for an eternity and no gloves either probably played a big part.
Pogi was the smartest when it came to wearing a rain jacket between the top 3 of the stage.
Today was one of those stages where endurance and the size of your gas tank are more important that the size of your engine.

I think that his power output between 50 and 20 kilometers also played a big part. In cyclocross he is normally one of the more warmer dressed guys in the race. At least, that is what my perception was this winter.

EDIT: to clarify, I do agree with your assessment that not wearing a rain jacket was wearing him down.

In my estimation, Wout has done extremely good, but I think he still has one more level to go to get top form. I predict he wins Flanders or Paris-Roubaix or both.

Van Aert rode the final 5k fastest of the 3 of them. Was 1m45s down, and only 45s at the finish. Pogacar had already passed the 5k mark when they showed him 1m10s chasing. The Dutch/Belgian Eurosport guys were timing it.

I would really like to see him riding Amstel and LBL this year. Both races should suit him with the level he is at the moment.

You also have this one right next to the Ventoux:

In the near vicinity, there's no other relevant terrain.

Speaking about MVP I recall that he also cracked in cold weather conditions during WC'19, when he looked like a big favourite and suddenly was completely empty.

Yes, but that was because he didn't eat enough, which he definitely did today. One day he'll get everything right.

different

yorkshire was pure honger knock (not eating)
today was not a honger knock, he said he kept eating all the way (and drinking). It was just cold + too long solo. He didnt have a jacker or something on, while his competitors behind did.
