Do you think Sunweb should now keep Oomen for the Tour...Sure Kelderman is back on his bike but way off his top I assume plus he could still crash again,

Wining a stage at the Giro is so so hard esp for a top 10 GC rider who is not usually in the break with de Gendt and co. There is no guarantee
Oomen should go stagehunting, but maybe he could leave the Giro in the third week and build up to the Tour for Tom. Or he should try to ride himself into the top 5 with a breakaway.

He is today, though. Without De Gendt.

Yes but no guarantee of a win..though I would love if he won several

I think he should be pulled maybe next week for the Tour support

How are you ever "quaranteed" a win?

He is a good rider and a good climber, that probably has the biggest chance out of the riders on the team that are left on the team in the race that could potentially get a stage win.

Sure, they could take him out of the race to save him for Tour but that would really be putting all your eggs in one basket because the same that happened to Tom here could easily happen in the Tour.

I think it is better they let Oomen stay in the race. Go for stages and KOM.

Well you could argue just the opposite
Leaving Oomen in the Giro weakens Dumoulin's Tour target and that is Sunwebs best option now to get a top result this year
Oomen is a good climber but breakaway riding is a game of chance and lots of top climbers could get KOM including GC guys given the 3rd week
So I am not convinced leaving Oomen in the Giro is the best option

It doesn't look good for sponsors if teams start randomly pulling guys from one of the biggest races of the year, no matter how good a reason. I'm sure they'll be talking to Oomen, working out if they can use this as training/possibly get some results and take him to the Tour as well if needed.

Oomen has his own thread, but 'ill add to the discussion: thanks to todays break, he's in an even better GC position than he was before (30s ahead of Roglic instead of 60s down). So if he would still want to ride for GC, he could. And honestly, i would would give him the opportunity to do so, without pressure. In that case, he should now start riding conservatively and nothing is lost for his personal GC aspirations. In the contrary.

However, i do question his form, looking at today's (yesterday's) stage. Obviously, these weren't the real mountains yet, but in form, he should never have been dropped by those guys. But he'll know better in what shape he is than me. If he's feeling good, i'd say, go for GC, he's back in the top 10, and actually ahead of ALL the favorites. He managed a top 10 spot last year, while working for Tom, and he can now stick to following instead. So IF his form is good, he could still get a nice GC out of this... If not, he might be better off going for stagewins in the last two weeks.

Honestly I cant quite understand all the talk of Oomen going for gc. He was only called up for the Giro after Kelderman crashed in Catalunya which is, what, 6 weeks before the Giro began? He is clearly not in great shape and the riders he will battle against have been targeting the race since before Christmas.

I think his best chance is to hope he can find some kind of legs during the next weeks and try to grab a stage win.

Obviously that's up to him. He might just be fresher in the third week than a lot of the other top 5-15 candidates. He's managed, through dumb luck, to actually be in the best possible GC position he could hope to be in after the first week, regardless of his form.

Granted, he is in a great position now. But with the level he has I believe he will out of gc contention soon enough. Riding at the front every day and keeping up in the gc in a grand tour requires thorough preparation and I dont think he is in any shape to do so. Guess we’ll know more after the tt though.

I really want Tom to crush the TdF. So, if Oomen can help when it counts, Sunweb should carefully manage his energy expenditures here. Unless he needs some high mountain training, he shouldn't go all out in the mountains. Having said that, there's a month or so between the two tours, so unless he injures himself in the Giro he should be good to go for the Tour.

Reading back the first three, four pages of this topic, they are hilarious. "Hope he doesn't think he can become GC contender and focusses on ITT" etc.
Then the next 15 pages read like a thriller, with a heartbreaking plot. Good stuff.
Who knows maybe Campenaerts goes the same route in a few years.

I know you was joking ;)

But Tom was 24-25 when he started to transition from being just a ITT specialist.

Campenaerts will be 28 this year, and I dont think its possible for him at all.

Thomas won Dauphine and TDF last year at 32, but he had been a super dom for years and won stage races in the 3-4 years leading up to it.
