Thats a fact of life. Pidcock who falls into the former category is on a high wage and his race results don't justify that salary, no matter his marketability.
Why doesn't he justify his salary? The Olympics are a far bigger deal than you realise, and he's won them twice. And plenty of other races across 3 disciplines.
Unless you're the classic roadie fan, who thinks off-roaders should be on low wages.

Which one of the two following victories do you think promotes INEOS the most?

Ultimately, you are employed by a team to win races. Nothing more or nothing less.
No, as a professional cyclist he's employed to create column inches and clicks for his sponsor. I don't know exactly how much he's paid and how much exposure he's generated in £, and whilst he's not someone who transcends the sport, like a Cavendish, he certainly seems to attract more media interest than his road wins would suggest.

We are discussing road racing. MVDP and VWA successfully ride different disciplines, however, 99% of discussion is about their performance in road races.

Of those who saw or heard of his victory in Paris, but didn't see nor hear of his Amstel victory, how many do you think thought of INEOS when they saw Pidcock?

Was his gold in Paris used to promote INEOS in mass advertisement immediately afterwards?
His Paris victory was one of the highlights of the Olympics? I wonder how many more followers he gained on social media afterward?

I'm sure it is a tiny element of the business, but they do make consumer products in personal and household hygiene (soaps, detergents, hand wipes etc), for sale in supermarkets etc.

They do, but they're not great imo, but it maybe just they're not suited to hard water areas.

But the bike maker he rode at the Olympics certainly liked it, in fact they only got back into off road bikes again because of Pidcock, guess which bike maker they are and which road team they currently make bikes for ?

Same with Sungod sunglasses they sponsor Ineos because of Pidcock, he wore those too at the Olympics.

Even at 2.7m he is overpaid againsts results delivered. It's a fact of life that some riders are underpaid and some are overpaid. Pidcock is in the former category.
I'd say it's about the current ballpark. Similar to Carapaz, Yates & Alaphilippe and I'd argue better value for money at least the last two years. But, clearly Ineos have paid him what the market value is, but you also have to speculate when signing a 5 year deal with a 19 year old. You also paying because there's a national link between rider, sponsor and team (why French riders earn so much for so little and remain in French teams all their career) but even riders like Froome or Bernal with all their previous success are still signed based on potential not results as the main decider of market value.

Are Ineos even after brand recognition/sponsor benefit from their various sports endeavours? They're just Ratcliffe's toys really, he is unfathomably wealthy.

Why buy a yacht when you can race one? Why buy a fancy bike when you can buy 100 and go the Tour? Why buy a box at the football when you can buy the actual club?
Primarily the big global brands like Ineos, T-Mobile, Mapei etc, the sponsorship has very little to do with selling products. T-Mobile were in the sport purely because it raised communication between global offices having a team to support. They noticed productivity of the workers increased and when studied, profits were too and it was all linked back to disparate offices and area managers communicating effectively because they were all following T-Mobile trying to beat Armstrong and it was like a club rather than unknown strangers. The same is true for Ineos, although that's a little more to do with sharing knowledge across all their sports than selling vehicles or chemicals to big industry. Essentially other sports got Brailsford. Ratcliffe isn't stupid, he would already be fully aware getting Brailsford was as much about helping the other sports as cycling.

set to stay at INEOS

Except all these articles are quoting the same source who last week was the claiming he'd definitely leave.

I don't think this is finished by any means yet

As I noted Ethan Hayters interview at Track worlds where he said Ineos were tricky to ride for this season, and even trickier when he told them he was off, and suggested they need to make changes.
