Tony announced his plan for next year! He is thinking about the Tour GC!!!

As usual he will start with Paric Nice and Pays Vasco.
If he fairs well there, he will have a go at the Tour GC!!!!
If not he will once more concentrate on the TT and try to lose some weight after the season. (Which would be a horrible idea in my opinion, as he wouldonly lose his power!

This year he will go to China again.

If he is thinking about GC next year he should try to lose weight after this season. I mean, what does he think? That he will suddenly start to climb much better next year without dropping a couple of kilos? Get real, that won't happen.

You are pretty new here so I will explain it to you. Near the end of every season Bavarianrider writes how Martin will go for next years Tour. He will then hype and hype until the first MTF when he fails miserably and Bavarianrider puts it down to injury etc. Meantime lots of people on here start hoping that Martin (although liking him) will fail just to shut Bavarianrider up.

That's half true. Actually it's until first HC or 1'st cat climb, not MTF. See Tourmalet before Luz Ardiden 2011. And then he always always always says: Tony should just quit and prepare the Vuelta and the Worlds. He's clearly out of form

Where should he lose weight?
It's not like he has any fat on him at the Tour anyway.
He went in this years Tour at 74kilogramms. I don't see how he can gow lower without loosing significant power.
Just like guys like Ullrich or Indurain couldn't go below a certain weight.
Let's not forget that Hejesedal won the Giro with 72 kilos these year.
Tonys weight isn't the problem.

In all honesty, I think Tony Martin should shift his focus to the cobbled classics.
PR is a great title to have..on par with a GT in the sense of publicity and prestige. Unless the parcour is even milder in a future TdF, he will always have problems in the mountians.

Good luck trying to get in Quick-Step's PR squad!

lol this idea that just because you are a good time trialist you are good on the cobbles is stupid, riding cobbles is almost all about skills. skills martin lacks as he isn't a good bike handler.

and just like pisti said, QS will never have a guy on their PR team learning how to ride the cobbles.

Going for GC in the Tour is a mistake IMO, he should focus on time trials, and winning the week long races like Paris-Nice. Maybe try out some cobbled races and classics. Not Paris-Roubaix because its the biggest and hardest classic, but some of the lower class races that have cobbles, just to see if he can ride the cobbles and be competitive on them.

So why did he himself, according to you, think about losing weight after next season? He can probably lose a couple of kilos, but it will of course mean he will lose some muscle mass and therefore power. His TT will suffer but to be competitive in the big tours you must be able to climb well for three weeks. Porte decided to lose weight this year and the consequence was that his TT got worse but he climbed much better than before.

Tony need to improve a lot to be competitive in the big tours, it's not like he has been decent so far, 10-15th place or so, and need to take a smal further step to break into top 10. Tony isn't even there, he cracks when the big mountains come. What counts in the mountains is power to weight ratio. If his power goes down a bit when he drops maybe 2 kilos, his power to weight ratio could none the less be better than before.

But, I agree with you that Tony looks quiet slim right now, so I can't see him losing more than tops 2 kilos.

It´s logical Martin´s goal has to be to become Tour Top10 contender. He is double World Champion in ITT, won Paris-Nice, so repeating this and maybe adding Romandie and Suisse won´t be everything for him. Instead, Tour Top10 and Olympic ITT champion are logical goals.

Cobbles? No, he doesn´t like this sucidal risk, going 100% gas into the pavé sections, he once said in an interview with German Procycling.
Races like Liege? He said he doesn´t like Liege too much due to the rather short, explosive climbs.

Tony to target GT Gc in the future!

In an interviwe with a german sports website today, Tony announced that he will focus on GT GC in the future. He says he doesn't want to name a certain result which he targets, but he'll focus on improving in the mountains and in recovering in order to contest in the GC.

how ridiculous is it anyway to let tony martin ride 1 km. he is about as leats suited for it as can be. they should've taken a more sprinter type of rider

This is just about publicity lol.

Are you saying it isn't ridiculous to race against a horse in the first place?

Besides, the horse needed to win. It's an honor thing in these rich oil states. To have good horses that is.

of course not, Hoogerland versus Unforgettable was one of the biggest events in dutch sports history
