Tony Martin will start today:

Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Cycling Team announces that Tony Martin will take the start this morning at the second stage of the Tour de France. The World Time Trial Champion is suffering from a fracture on the scaphoid of his left hand, but, he will try to get on his bike this morning wearing a plastic cast that won't bother him when handling his bike, which includes shifting, breaking and steering. The decision was taken tonight after team doctor Helge Riepenhof discussed the situation with the rest of the team medical staff and with Doctor Rudolf, Head of the hand surgery department BG hospital in Hamburg.

"We will take it step by step, kilometer by kilometer," Martin said. "The first objective is to try and arrive to the next time trial on next Monday. I know it won't be easy, it will be painful, but I really want to try. The Tour de France is really important for me and I don't want to give up without trying."

I am far from being a medical expert, but surely there's no way if he actually has a fractured scaphoid he will complete the stage today. Much better just to put it down to bad luck, withdraw and try to get it healed in time for the Olympics (though scaphoids can be difficult to heal).

Thinking back though, I'm sure when I had a tumble on my bike a few years ago and had a couple of fractures in my arm, I was told that it can be rather difficult to see if a scaphoid is fractured or not - it can take a few days or a week before they can tell. Maybe somebody with more medical knowledge can enlighten us.

Glad he didn't have to abandon so early in the race and with 90K of ITT to go.

I hope that by then he won't be hurting too much anymore and he can stompede his 58x11....

Cancelara hasn't beaten Tony in a long TT since 2010:rolleyes::rolleyes:

canc was only beaten by tony in 2011.

the truth is, he wasn't at his best that year, obviously.

canc is better on the flat, better on hills, faster, and no one has the same "engine". however tony recovers better.

Cancellara is a more complete rider yes but Martin is better in the Time Trial, is stronger in the real mountains, he can possibly beat Cance in a prologue

he can beat him in a prologue if canc isn't at his best and he can beat canc ( if he is at his best) but only after 3 weeks of racing. both on top form for a TT without prior stages? canc wins 9 out 10, as he did.

Yeah that's why Tony totally trashed Cancellara in the worlds in 2011:rolleyes:

9 out of 10.

canc was worse than in previous years, as the results show.

right know canc is already better again, obviously.

canc trashed tony pretty much anywhere prior to 2011. it was a bad year (just like this one until now, but shape isn't the factor here).

canc is much better as rider and as TTer. most likely the best TTer ever, by a not so small margin.

This makes no sense at all, in the prologue Martin had a flat tyre, yesterday he had a fracture in his hand, they haven't raced against eachother for the rest of the year

Tony hadn't reached his peak before 2011 in TT. Not quiet uncommon that you are not at yet your top at age 24 25 yet, isn'T it?

of course and most likely he still isn't, right? but right now canc still is the best rider and the best TTer, as his palmares show.

you also have to understand lack of motivation when you are destroying every TT 6 years in a row.

thanks to big tony, canc is back. they are both awesome.

Tony beat Cancellara in every TT in 2011.
In 2010 it was a 2 -2 draw.

tony lost both at le tour and was totally destroyed at the worlds, just like the year before and every important event before that.

does 2011 change that given the circunstances?no way. canc is better, much better.
