Winning from the break is so random sometimes. Rolland and Gogl put in a really nice effort and will have no chance. On other days you have weaker riders winning easily. But it is like it is.

Sanchez was declining hard, Valverde just came back, Kloden was declining... it was the PERFECT storm for Wiggo. There literally were no one outside of Nibz who wasn't all that great. So yeah. Horrible Tour with a horrible level, horrible route, horrible everything.
Also guys like Basso and Menchov were on their last legs. Essentially every GC contender from the 2000s was gone. 2011/12 was the end of the old wild west.

2012 was also a route issue. They barely did any climb over 6% and had an ungodly amount of ITTs

I don't mind 100+ kms of ITT, but in hindsight one of those long ITT's could have included some climbing.

And add a third stage in the Alps, a proper queen stage, and suddenly it's all okay.

Really hard to balance 110km of ITTs these days, I think 80 is about the max.
