Tour de France Tour de France 2022: Stage 11 (Albertville – Col du Granon Serre Chevalier, 151.7k)

Not only my criticism, but also from the TV reporters on two channels where I followed the race. And some analysts after the race. Why do you think objective analysis should not be made? Without Pogacar's slump, bringing Majka back could have had a major impact. And bringing Bardet and Gaudu back wasn't smart either. That was not the fault of Van Aert, but of the team management.
Because I think a bunch of people who don't know all the facts about how riders are going, who have mostly never raced or run a team, going over every tiny decision and criticizing it... is pointless. But I guess that's what people do on cycling forums. You may note that actual riders and DS's are far more reluctant to quibble about every little tactical move, and reserved their comments for higher-level issues.

I don't mean to single you out as much as point to this as an example of what's gotten pretty tiresome with regard to JV and their tactics the whole Tour.

I love Italy and usually prefer the Giro, but this Tour is really good so far.
The stage itself was stuff for ages.

As far as I like Pog and the way he is racing, in the last stages he looked way too arrogant or overconfident (or scared for that matter). Literally sprinting to the line on 4% for 2 seconds when you already have the lead, you're the best TTer (and climber supposedly?), wtf man? Plus the way he baited Jumbo today.. UAE had strong enough team to keep Roglic (even with WVA) on a leash, meaning ~minutes at the bottom of Grannon.
He is injured, he is 3 minutes behind you. Odds are/were he isn't gonna survive the stage. Leave him play his game and go one on one with Jonas in the last climb.. You'd likely take 2 minutes on him anyway.
Instead, he decided to go Contador PN 2.0, respond all the attacks from far out and he paid for this.

Good thing is, he is a winner and fighter. Plus, he's won the Tour twice already, so if he feels good, we may have a great race.

P.s. I didn't like Bardet back in the day, but he really grew on me this year. Hopefully he does well in the second half.

P.s. 2: As I said yesterday, can we already stop that "Mas is getting better as the race go on" mantra now?

If anyone knows Roglič, it's Pogačar. Pogačar was afraid to let Roglič go in a break. He was afraid of a heavily injured man who was 3 minutes behind. If that's not a statement of respect and realization how good Roglič can be, i don't know what is.

And JV played it perfectly. Respect to Roglič to go along with it.

Vingegaard getting the super rare GC win on a mtf by over a minute.
In fact he didn't, Quintana was only 59 seconds behind. This means the last time a gc rider attacked on the final climb and won the stage by over a minute in a TdF stage, remains Vincenzo Nibali in Hautacam 2014. In fact I believe that might have been the last time this has happened in any gt.

It was Jonas that put the cherry on the top.
at the last climb, Jumbo Vista tactics did not look that solid (entertaining and admirable, sure.. I personally loved it).
but all Jumbo Vista riders were gone and Roglic was more or less out of the GC with an intense loss to front riders and Jonas all alone with Pogacar in high cheering mood, with Majka setting a decent pace.

- at that moment 5 km to finish...it looked somewhat problematic for Jumbo Vista, and if Majka then had been able to also drop Jonas with his pace for Pogacar.. then it would be a complete mess for Jumbo, as Roglich lost like 11½ min and now are completely out of the GC aqquation.

its Jonas. at that point, all alone with 5km to finish.. with Roglic completely dropped and gone.. who flipped it around and changed the picture... so it suddenly looked like a brilliant tactic from Jumbo Vista with Jonas & Roglic & co.. early attack on Pogacar.

It surprised me how much Jonas was able to gain on the last 5km, also surprised how much Roglic dropped..so that JV play-card is out of the deck.

Why limit yourself to the final climb? Froome showed how it's done in the Giro. Pogi too in the Vuelta.

When Van Aert let himself be overtaken and was instructed to wait further for Roglic, Van Aert was clearly not satisfied.
We could see that on television. It was a wrong decision by Jumbo. Roglic was coocked. And Van Aert not only brought back coocked Roglic, but also direct rivals Bardet and Gaudu.... and the strongest teammate of Pogacar, Majka. This could have caused Jumbo to lose the Tour, as Majka could still do a lot of work for Pogacar on the Granon, when Vingegaard in turn was isolated. Fortunately Pogacar cracked, not Vingegaard.

It might have been a gesture to a former captain, yes. But it reminded me of last year where there were similar examples of Vingegaard being left isolated.

It depends on where you live. For example i could watch it on Eurosport or on our national TV. Without the time shift function one could still watch a replay on lets say Eurosport. Like lets say next day before the next stage goes live.
For the Tour, there are also free replays available on for example German, French, Italian or Belgian TV - but only if you live there, or have a VPN* available:

*SmartDNSProxy (which I use) for example works for all of them

It looked that way 5km before the finish yes. But Pogačar was cooked because Roglič and Vinge attacked him again and again on a climb before. That's why injured Roglič couldn't follow any more in the last climb, Pogačar was done and Vinge found that out when he attacked.

Pog not a robot after all.

But tommorow and days after there is no more Roglič, Pog won't cover his attacks. It's only Vinge vs. Pog (and couple other guys) and Pogačar will be aggressive. It's not over at all.
