Tour de France Tour de France 2022: Stage 5 (Lille Métropole – Arenberg Porte du Hainaut, 157k)

WVA crashed and ran into a car when it touched its brakes and still was the main reason Vingo saved his Tour, so I don't see any case against him. He did fantastic pulling Vingo back with no help from other teams. Where was Ineos? Their entire fresh team with specialists and 3 GT "contenders" didn't do nearly as much as WVA did by himself. My issue is with team decision making. When Roglic dropped they should have sent either La Tour or WVA back to quickly get him to the Vingo group. He was immediately behind the team cars by himself. A quick effort there and he saves his Tour ambitions. Instead, he was left to his own and then with inferior support and look what happened. He had to do a ton of pulling himself after the crash. Vingo did literally 0, so huge win for Vingo securing team leadership. I don't want to see Roglic tap out.
 
It took WVA way too long to get back and he had already been dropped from the main group anyway. He was riding for himself at that point and not the team. He's a damn good rider but this is the Tour and he should be immediately dropping back to help when he's of no help to Roglic. Sure he eventually did a good job but it took way too long
Or JV first told Van Aert to stay with Roglic (also to remain in yellow, not unimportant for a team), thinking Vingegaard would have enough help from 2-3 others to chase back rather quickly? When that didn't work, they let Van Aert drop back, leaving Roglic with only 1 helper (risky in itself). That seems quite reasonable to me.

People are so harsh here...
  1. Powless dropped Cort because Cort was cramping. Cort would have been dropped even by Froome at that point.
  2. Pogacar didn't gain a lot, but by following Stuyven, he rode his own pace and stayed out of trouble as in 'attacking is the best defense'.
  3. WvA clearly was indicating Vingegaard to follow his wheel, but Vingegaard was struggling with his (oversized) bike from a team mate and stopped pedalling. You can't expect WvA to brake and stop next to Vingegaard waiting for another bike, especially when it was clear that Vingegaard had other team mates around.
  4. Roglic... (and Ewan) really unlucky! How on earth did that bale end up there? A car or motorcycle pushed it on the road?

Also Vermeersch his crash, was bridging to Pogi en Stuyven. Maybe with him they would've catched the leading group and win more than 13sec

Fair point , JV are known for their incompetent strategy so that is plausible. WVA was about 20 seconds behind Roglic when Vingegaard had his mechanical so asking him to stay with Roglic would have been dumb.
 
I've stayed off the forum all day, and here's my analysis of the day:
1: Pogi showed his strength on the cobbles, but only got 13 seconds out of it. I felt like good ol' Phil and Bob were acting like he won 5 minutes on them.
2: Jumbo has to try a team attack on the Galibier/Croix de Fer. Roglic looked ok, and the advantage for Jumbo is most of the big GC teams finished in group Van Aert.
3: Apart from WTF Bettiol, EF tried their hardest to win, and hats off for that.
4: Congrats Clarke! Nice win, IPT is happy.
 
Bettiol charging on several occasions with two of his teammates in the front group was so obvious and really unsavoury. This kind of deal has always been in cycling fair enough, but doing it whilst screwing over your mates, he should be thrown out by his team.

Pogacar looked really good on the stones however, a bit of good luck in no mechanicals yes but always in good position every time.
 
How silly was that from Powless. Lost the stage win for the team AND the yellow jersey. Bettiol also doing stupid things. This EF Education performance had Movistar quality.
That was a well-timed attack from Powless and could have worked. If you mean dropping Cort, the group was going to drive that last sector really hard no matter who in front, and Cort would have still been dropped.

That's all true except for the part that Jumbo may have acknowledged that Roglic's crash was too harsh for him to stand a chance even if we didn't loose time.

Hence the difference between a crash and a mechanical.
