I've never understood the willingness of so many riders to be content riding for 2nd place? Is there decent prize money for a place on the podium? Otherwise what exactly is the point - who cares about a second place, GT stage or otherwise
A lot of cycling lore is based on love of guys almost winning.

But elite athletes also have to have high opinions of themselves and many in that group believes they can maybe beat Jasper when it isn’t a bunch sprint. It’s been a hard day and that changes things.

And O’Connor knows his odds of beating those two in a sprint, while small, are much bigger than his odds of winning if they are caught. He has to cling to the belief that they are more tired than him

I'm wondering whether having JDP in the chase was a mistake for Alpecin. Seems like he's burning a lot of energy before a mountain day, and it feels like his presence is hindering MVDP's chances at the stage.

You'd think it would be blindingly obvious that joining the chase group would shut it down with near 100% certainty & therefore leave both himself and MVDP with zero chance of a win. I think that's crediting the riders with a bit more tactical intelligence than they deserve though to be perfectly honest. What him and VDP were doing clearly only works if VDP is in the front group.
