Tour de France Tour de France 2024: Stage 19: Embrun - Isola 2000, 19/07 144.6k

Pogi and Evenepoel with the same legs as on Plateau de Beille. Kelderman and Jorgenson likewise. A shame that Vingegaard could only have those legs for one day.

I think Visma handled this correctly. Good plan for stage, well executed and adapted to the circumstances. Had Vingegaard been good, he'd have attacked from an excellent situation 10 km from the top of Bonette. As he by then knew that he didn't have the legs needed, it was a good call to defend and hang in as well as he could, while telling his teammates to go for the stage win. Jorgenson nearly did it, and it's hard to see what they could have done differently to keep Pogi behind them.

There's still a difference between having the legs to follow to Remco, who didn't seem to go all in today either, and having the legs to challenge Pogačar.
But he had legs to probably ride and finish somewhere between Pog and Remco today, which would mean he has the same legs as PdB. He just doesnt have it mentally atm to push himself now when he has lost. He didnt bother today to even give it a go. Clearly seen at the finish that he is not coping well with this beating.

Thats the difference.

In case people have forgotten. Last year, Vingo won by 7:29 over Pog, the largest MOV in like a decade, I believe. Only something like 16 riders were within 1 hour of Vingo on GC.
For all the pearl-clutching going on here, if anything, last year was even more monstrous than this year.
Yes, but Vingo didnt win all year and every type of cycling race there is in the calender. He didn't win the Giro with ten minutes before coming to dominate the Tour(and it wasnt near this level of dominance). And he also didn't win every stage he wanted just by riding the competion seemlessly easy of his wheel. Gap also got big only because of Teddy's famous crack on Loze, the race was a lot tighter until that.

I agree that he has taken a hit mentally, which I also posted about the other day, but I don't think that in any way rules out him not having his best shape either (and I'm talking in comparison with other riders, not purely based on what numbers he can produce).

His TT was still out of this world. Nothing seen before.

And the difference between Vinges specialization and Pogs greatness just speaks to what their respective place in history will be.

He is at the highest level he has ever been though performance-wise and I dont see how you can argue anything else, since that is actually factual and can be backed by numbers. Which now doesnt matter apparently.

If anything, the problem he seems to have is recovering from the mental blow he suffered. Not that the legs arent good.

If everybody is improving, then I don't think the numbers themselves mean that much. For me it makes much more sense to look at the time gaps between the riders, and how they race against each other compared to previous head-to-heads. If you believe Vingegaard producing his best numbers ever despite not having had the perfect preparation for the Tour, is proof he couldn't have been stronger, then you're of course allowed to do that. I see the signs that he wasn't close to matching to Pogačar's accelerations and looked more horrible than usual when descending, as indications that he could have been stronger. That does in no way mean, I assume he could have won this race. It's the same opinion I have about last year's race, by the way, but obviously with the roles reversed.

Another show performance by Pogacar. He made the same bow as when he won the queen stage in the Giro. I would like to know his time compared to Rominger in '93.

Jorgenson could probably be fourth or fifth in the Tour if he rode for himself. They should have given him the combativity award.

Carapaz winning the KoM is a bit of a joke. ASO has screwed up the point system and Carapaz took advantage of it.

If I think? It is factually correct that he is producing his best numbers ever and performance-wise!

His legs are good and better than ever, so it goes against what you originally said and quoted me with.

Only thing he is suffering from is not being as good as Pog here and taken a mental blow, which can actually be seen and heard.

His legs arent bad though. Thats speculation and not supported with any facts. Thats your feeling on it, which is cool. Not correct though.
