So a stage can never finish with a descent ever again?
There are gradients in how dangerous a descent can be, right? And I think the downhill of the the Galibier is looking for trouble. But that's just me, I wouldn't put this in, I don't see the added value of it. Let's hope everything will be fine tomorrow.

Maybe there is a small chance van Aert could be in the mix tomorrow. Gradients not that steep after all.
From cyclinguptodate:

With the stage ending with a post-Galibier descent however, van Aert himself is fancying his chances of success.
"Normally that's something that suits me," the Belgian admits. "What my role will be, will still have to be determined. It depends on how the other guys do in supporting Jonas. Based on that, we can decide what I'm going to do.

If headwind plays as big a role as everyone on here is saying then good chance at least someone goes for a flyer on the descent to win, like Rodriguez last year. Pidcock too far behind probably. Pogacar will need a good gap over the top to not let it come back to a sprint.

Theres is some descents who should not be done. I think the descent to valloire is not dangerous, so no problem on this case.
I think in terms of risk of serious injury or death, a wide-open descent like this with some relatively high-speed bends is actually the most dangerous. Of course bad pavement could make a descent more dangerous, but that wouldn‘t happen at the Tour either way so something like the Galibier is actually pretty far up there. You just don‘t get a lot of criticism about it, because riders are more taken aback by narrow roads which look more dangerous.

Wouldn’t UAE drop most people with their train? If they go all out, I don’t expect 10 people to survive, and not Pidcock as one of them.

Should be fun!
GC contenders only at the finish, no way a break makes it

I am not sure about that ....EF wont chase the break just like DSM as they want all bonus seconds taken

So will Visma or UAE chase ? I am not sure they will .....Same for Bora

Unless INEOS do ?

In previous years this would be the perfect stage to send him up the road on standby.

If the headwind causes more conservative pacing all it would take is one or two of the more aggressive descenders to be close enough to bridge and then attack on the descent. I’m not sold the gaps will be that small though.

Nobody.

It's train day.
Interesting. I woulda said good day for the break to get away, with EF in charge of the bunch. As an aside, interested to see how they perform tomorrow. Some strong guys but this is different.

I would have guessed a pretty strong early break, and then the trains for GC behind. Thoughts?

I hope he makes it, but there is a WAY higher percentage of time spent going uphill tomorrow. He could get dropped at Kilometer 20 if the front is going hard.
He was also really sick through most of Stage 1, only stabilised in the last third of the race.
