I don't buy it, though. TdF hasn't had a non mountain non ITT stage 20 since 2001.

stage 20 of 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2018, 2022

even 2002 and 2005 were not exactly MTTs

notice when they largely stopped

what that dweeb Gouvenou took over. Had one in 2014 and promptly stopped it for the most part

In what way are the years you mention different from the years since 2001 that you don't mention in this regard?

non mountain non ITT. Meaning either a time trial or a mountain stage. The Tour "always" (as of this century) ends with either a mountain stage or a TT followed by Champs Elysees.

So there's simply no way the final stage is a normal road stage between Nantua and Pontarlier. And with all that talk about a stage with an "unprecedented format" I think that might still be on for stage 20. It's either that or at least one of the locations is wrong.

Given that they are around Jura I'd think they can do it a hard hilly stage (can't they?) which may be just about the single best thing of the whole route.

Check my post from earlier. You will be disappointed.

It’s wild how much we still don’t know about the route. Bravo to the mayors, etc for keeping it quiet. That unprecedented stage format and stage 20 are the big wonders at this point. What is everyone still most interested in?

This route seems horrible, it's like a route from the 1990/00's but with less ITT and much tamer mountain stages.

I do wonder if it’ll be a route that might save Pog from himself. It looks like a route that’ll help him stay fresh for what Jonas throws at him in the relatively few and far between showdown stages.

I am inclined to be less critical of routes than most people but I am watching the Bastille Day stage. If they’re doing that ridiculously long transfer just to do 2 cat 3s and a cat 2, I’ll be annoyed on several levels.

It will land somewhere in the 2009, 2012 and 2017 group as one of the worst Tour routes of the past 20 years. Exact spot dependent on specifics to be announced tomorrow, although it can't be worse than 2009. They really don't deserve to get bailed out by Pogacar and Vingegaard again, and there's an argument to be made it would be better in the long run if they don't.

That 2009 route didn’t even the excuse of going through the flat north which this one has to do

2009 at least had Le Grand Bornard which was a very good stage.
I can't see a single stage that I'd label very good on this route. The other mountain stages qere way worse though so it probably levels out.

2012 would be a great tour route with the 3 aliens

no sky trains sucking the life out. We'd see the Glandon Grand Explosion

Pog likely on the back foot after a long ITT, forcing him to do type III civilization WMD attacks

we'd see mega raids on Grand Colombier, a Glandon Grande Explosion, and Pyrenean Mega Power

2012 route could have featured Pogacar, Vingegaard, Pantani, Jordan, Ali, Messi and Ronaldo and it would have been garbage all the same.
Seeing Pogacar handle a route of 18 sprints, 1 hill stage, 1 20k individual time trial and 1 medium mountain stage would be fun, lol. Would you guys take him or the field in that scenario?
