It became even more interesting now:
4 French riders are on the attack, captured the 2 chases (so it's an 8-men group at 4:30), and the peloton is also reducing distances 30" behind (Henao had a ill-timed flat).

1 Jonas Koch (Allemagne)

3 Simone Consonni (Italie)
4 Stan Godrie (Pays-Bas)

Anyone who have more information about the progress of the first stage? How did Wurtz Schmidt get second? And was Consonni really the fastest sprinter from the bunch or was it just a flat sprint? (wondered by the strong 4th place of Godrie and disappionting 9th from Gaviria)

Koch got in a solo break and got about 14 minutes advantage, no one was really riding in the peloton. There were some counter attacks later on but no really interesting guys for the GC, so the peloton still wasnt doing much, with 75K to go Koch still had 13-14 minutes gap over the peloton. Then with 50K to go or something the French decided to do a 4 man attack (Gesbert + Peters + Martin + Maison), Henao got a puncture just after that but there the pace was lifted. The 4 French caught up with the guys who were on the road except for Koch. With about 10K to go the group with the French was caught.
Koch still had a 1.30 gap with 5K to go and he just held on, Wurtz Schmidt attacked with 1.2k to go and got 2nd, rest was a bunch sprint. Gaviria might have done some work to bring the peloton back to the French but that is just guessing.
The sprint was slightly uphill but nothing major, very suited to Consonni, Godrie is also a pretty good sprinter.

Apparently Gaviria had to give his wheel to Henao. http://www.cyclingnews.com/features/new-sprint-diamond-fernando-gaviria-dreaming-of-paris-roubaix/

Would be awesome if he ended up being a contender for Roubaix. a Colombian winning Roubaix, that would just be awesome.

Indeed. Hopefully we'll see most of them on WT teams soon.

I think Kragh will go to a WT team next year. Pedersen will stay at least one more year on Cult which is fine for him for now. Würtz has offers from "good teams" but I reckon he will stay one more year on continental level. Dont know with Kamp, I think he will stay with his current team one more year as well considering this is the first time since turning senior that he is feeling well in his team I believe.

its been a long time since we had such a talented roster with Kragh, Mads Pedersen, Würtz and Kamp.

Team of two years ago was at least as good with Cort, Valgren, Sterobo, Asbjørn Kragh, Haugaard and Norman Hansen. Sterobo was a real prospect for stage races but stopped after last season. It was ridiculous that no teams signed Haugaard after that season. He's had injuries since but mostly seems demotivated. Idk what happened to Lasse Norman at Garmin, he was at the same level as van Baarle two years ago. Cort and Valgren on the other hand are doing okay and happily Asbjørn Kragh will go to a good team next year for sure.
