The retired Laurent Jalabert probably best fits the ticket. And of course Val Verde. The very rare "complete" riders. I think it comes down to type II x muscle fibre composition; which probably also means cycling looses a lot of this type of talent to other sports where more money can be earned for less effort by someone who is relatively fatigue resistant as well as fast. Football for example. Sean Kelly is another example...

Thing is, Valverde and Jalabert are both too good at climbing for Cândido. Even at his peak he never actually won the Volta. That's why Ryo mentioned Bettini, I think that's a more accurate representation of where his climbing was at.

Bettini finished 7th or 8th in the Giro once. Admittedly it wasn't the deepest of fields but Bettini could climb well if he wanted.

Yes, and Cândido was 2nd in the Volta twice, but not on the most mountainous of parcours. Bettini's highest GT finish that I know of is 19th in 2008, so he can climb plenty but isn't one of the elites. Valverde and Jalabert are both better climbers than him, and most definitely better climbers than Cândido Barbosa, who was primarily a sprinter who could do the all-round things as a secondary skill.

bettini was 10th in the first or second tour he raced, when he was riding for carrera, he was very young and he took advantage of some breakaways when he was not anymore a contender for GC.
he never did well in long climbs in his career , except in his wins in tour of lombardy where he was able to stay with the best on ghisallo.
he never won a top mountain finish in a GT.
valverde and jaja ,a vomplete different story, i agree

seems one of the best in climbs here but in itt I would think some of the south americans will beat him most notably giacinti. but who knows

Tondo has top 5's in very well competed TT's. Not at his top in SA though, but last year he had sort of the same TT results as nibali for instance.

Bettini had some mtf stages in the Vuelta where he finishes not so much behind the favourites. While riding himself into form for the worlds every year.
But to be honest, EBH seems a better comparison. Bettini has way more class (what did barbosa prove in one days of 260k?) handeling those distances is as much a special strength as itt, sprints or mountains...

Glad there's something a little more vertical coming up, race wise. The rosters aren't bad either (although no european riders will have any form).

I'm calling: Roberto Ferrari, Sebastien Hinault, Jacopo Guarnieri for the first stage.

Others to watch for the overall: Serpa, Bernabeu, Baliani.

for the sprints I'd say marcos crespo. no really strong sprinters from europe compared to last year with chicchi and napolitano.

for overall Soler, Giacinti, Serpa, Tondo, Oyarzun I think

We may be forgetting Basso. No reason why he would have any condition/interest at this time of year, but he could still end up in the top 5 or even win.

he won't do too well in itt I think and this race has always been won in itt except 2009 when lucero won from a long break, otherwise giacinti had won that race also because of itt.

Good start line up. Team healthcare on Boardman bikes should be interesting, and Endura.
Looking out for Soler, Capechi. Basso. Sebastien Hinault will probably get a stage..
Its clearly going to be a better race than TDU but there you go.

I wonder if Charlie Wegelius will get any opportunities on this team. It would be cool if he could get a stage win or something this year (not this race).
