The crash must have held the peleton up a bit because the gap to the leaders has increased by almost a minute.

2009 Vuelta & Giro di Lombardia, anyone?

yeah this.

and ebh ? the guy had heaps of notable results before the ToB, better results too. I suppose we should only notice when he does something in an anglo-saxon race tho... Critérium International? Eneco?(PT Race lol) Tour de l'Avenir??

Cycling Weekly on twitter is promising crosswinds in the last 15 km. Rasch for the win. Now to avoid this thread and wait until midnight to see the highlights.

Also interesting when you look at the last three years and the riders that have come to everyones attention in the ToB.

last year, Hoogerland (Mountains jersey)
2009, De Ghent (Points and Mountains jerseys)
2008, Boasson Hagen (3 stages and Sprints competition)

Yes, they had all had wins prior to the ToB, but for a lot of fans, certainly british ones, this was the first time they had really seen them show their class.

That also kinda kicks the weak field argument into touch.

Be interesting to see who this years breakout star is.
Of those you mentioned I'll only give you De Gendt...Maybe they came to the british fans attention in ToB but most cycling fans would rather notice EBH's 3 stage wins at l'Avenir, his victory in the ITT in Criterium International and the stage he won at eneco tour while doing a sitting leadout, leaving everyone behind (+would've won the race overall if not for losing time in the cross winds). Hoogerland was extremely good in 2009 so I don't see how he was a "breakthrough" at ToB at all, but as you said, perhaps for British fans...

Agree with the above. Hoogerland and Hagen were already established before their successful ToBs. De Ghent was very much a new guy on the block however.

He had some results. But i agree unless you track the younger guys he would have been some what of an unknown.

Besides, De Gendt's big break through with a wider audience was at Paris-Nice this year.

Bit of a let down after the Tour though, let's hope he wins something here and top 10 in WC TT.

Shows how weak the field is if Cav can win a race outside a Grand Tour. At least these days :)

Back in 2009 though...

and if you read my post you would have noticed that I said

a) they had all had wins before

b) for a lot of fans particularly british ones this was the first time we had seen them show their class

yes, hoogerland had a top ten in Lombardia but for a lot of people (ie normal people who dont live and breathe cycling) this was the first time they had seen him attacking on a daily basis. The same with Eddy Boss, yes he was well known as a good prospect as an up and coming rider, but this was the first time he had been seen winning regularly, on free to air tv, and therefore brought him to the attention of a lot of people.

Im fairly knowledgable and I hadnt heard much about Hoogerland prior to the tour of britain apart from the doping rumours, I knew about Eddy, and Id never even heard of Thomas De Gent

Try reading my posts correctly, before contradicting me by saying what I had already said myself. ;)

but here on the forum we are a select bunch. the vast majority of cycling fans watch the tour, maybe one or two classics, and whatever else is shown on free to air tv (california, tour of britain).

I understand you, but you seem to think that "normal people" = brits, "normal people" would pay more attention to races like Eneco tour and Criterium international than ToB ;)

Not to mention this statistic, but whatever.

reading your post you would think ToB was actually a big race, or had bigger significance.

Other then brits(i guess they are normal people), i think your point holds little value. Because in reality, casual cycling fans, who kno limited info are still sure to know GlB, vuelta, criterium, eneco etc before the ToB

Some usefull sprinters there, I've seen worse..

Looks like a temporary alliance of HTC and Sky will want to control it in on the flats. HTC for Cav. Sky do not want a random breakaway to get away and will concentrate on getting their guys (I guess Geraint above all) up front on the more selective days.

Aargh, was Geraint's leadout too fast again? :D
