I thought that he did, yes. But regardless of whether one of them got the jersey or not, they rode that stage horribly. They should have just taken pulls and gotten as much time as possible for the GC. They should never have let the peloton come this close and if Perry ended up not getting the jersey, I must say that I'm speechless.

yeah, normally not, but they had Richardson sitting on their wheel for 40k, and attacking them throughout the final 15 or so. I think considering that, they did a decent job. It's understandable that they get frustrated at some point.

From 0 to 7 seconds difference lol. Big mistake from the organization, atleast they fixed it.

yeah, but with Richardson +2s, Paasschens +4s and Meeus +7s, there actually was nowhere a gap of more than 3s, so applying the rules in the way they did (incorrectly), +0 was the only possible outcome.

Richardson started cycling at 25 and racing at 26, maybe that has something to do with it

interesting post stage interview on the ITV highlights, Richardson was saying there was an agreement between the riders in the breakaway that 2 of them would sit up after 116km, which was after the last sprint before the finish, when that didnt happen, that was when he chose not to contribute to help the breakaway anymore, his attacks after 10km to go were to get away, but he no longer cared if the breakaway was going to get caught or not anymore by doing that.

to which Pippa asked "why not ?" and Richardson replied because he'd kept his word. and all of what he was doing was being agreed by the team car.

so I dont think he was riding as out of sorts as it appeared. be interesting to hear what Neds podcast made of it.

and Ben Perry is now in the leaders jersey after the commissaires amended the race results following the gap calculation rules, just a shame he didnt get the podium ceremony part to go with it.

Except, Richardson was the only one who sat up despite the agreement - Richardson got what he deserved because there was no way the other three riders would allow him to succeed with such tactics - It's a bit similar to the Giro stage in 2020 or 2021 when a Colombian in a breakaway with De Gendt refused to co-operate, so De Gendt pulled the pin on the breakaway.

Really odd. Just saw the interview as well, and it's also what St Piran says on their website:

"Alex was in a breakaway with 4 others, and it wasn’t ideal as two others of the riders were +14 seconds on the general classification which would mean that the General Classifications teams would want to chase the break. So, Alex spoke to the riders and set an agreement that two of them would sit up once the sprint and king of the mountains points were passed and that is what they did, and they pushed their advantage in the cross-wind section to 5mins before the tailwind section which was all in the plan and it was all going well. Sadly after, the king of the mountains and sprint points were passed the other riders in the breakaway didn’t stick to the agreement, so we decided with Alex to sit on and saved his energy to try and get away for the finish"

What kind of stupid agreement is that supposed to be? Why would Perry and Paasschens drop back after picking up a couple of useless bonus seconds? And what would Richardson even gain from it, then having to do 50k together with only Bonneu, meaning they would get caught anyway?! I really doubt that this is the true story behind it.

...but going by the Ben Perry interview in the British Continental podcast (on from ~11 minutes), this really seems to be what happened :D

I can see why AR might have felt a bit screwed, but it also seems like he was the only one who really accepted that part of the deal. He could have taken more KOM points without the deal, but in the end his chance of winning the stage also improved. Or at least it could have improved, if he had waited to attack until the final few kilometres, where Perry and Paasschens would always start to look at each other.

Pidcock, Teuns and a surprising Oscar Onley attacked on the final categorised climb. 45 seconds on a reduced peloton, gap is still going out in spite of a headwind and Movistar and the smaller British sides working.

Right as I say it the gap starts to fall again but there's another hill coming up, peloton won't make it back before the foot but the stronger riders behind might bridge.

Serrano, Pidcock, Teuns and Fraile first over the summit, in that order for 3, 2 and 1 bonus seconds, with a little gap.

Seems like Uno-X worked a lot today, yet neither Charmig or Halland Johannesen had the strength to go with the decisive move. A bit disappointing.

To me it looks like the last 3 stages are quite easy and it will be hard to make gaps? So bonification will decide this race?

Stages 6 and 8 might do some damage but with three bonification sprints every day, there absolutely is a strong chance of those being decisive.
Pidcock as usual overrated
He spent half the stage on the attack and would still have won had he not drifted to last wheel. Legs were not his problem today.

Legs are not the only thing that make a cyclist. Bad decision making again
