Tahoe race, elevation 6500-7300, snowy, sub-freezing temps, 55 MPH+ descents, first day of the race, over 100miles. Dangerous conditions.
Good call by the organizers, calling the race is showing the respect for the fallen rider in the GIRO and for the other riders who are in the TOC.
I like the call.
Contrary to what the haterz say here, this isn't Rollerball, Roller Derby, NAscar, Ice Hockey, Pro wrestling or ultimate fighting.
Last year in the ToC Cancellera went down at high speed and Boonen wrecked his season in a spill in Sacramento.
The Tahoe stage was a high speed circuit race at altitude.
It is not a once over the summit GIRO stage.
If anyone thinks that a 4 hour race at altitude, sub-freezing with snow and maybe ice is OK say Aye!

+1

While many Euro-Centric cycling fans are quick to dismiss the "provincialism" of a race in California, the fact remains that the Northern Sierra are a nasty place to be in bad weather.

In Mammoth, about 100 miles south of South Lake Tahoe, they received more snow this year than anywhere else in the WORLD, with current season totals at 1,870 cm(736", 61', 18.6 meters).

If you're wondering just how nasty it can get, just ask these folks: Donner party

The Sierra Nevada are the Honey Badger of the mountian world...

Not really sure what the temperature at 4am has to do with a bike race, but never mind.

It's currently 11:05 am in California, and the temperature right now in Lake Tahoe is 29 degrees fahrenheit, -1.6 degrees celcius. Since the stage was initially to start half an hour ago, it might have something to do with the bike race now...

Supposedly the race will be going ahead. Official announcement in 5 minutes

will start a 1:15

Shortened to 50miles, I hear.
If so, good on the organisers for sorting something out.

As an aside, for those in the uk/ireland. The race is on ITV4 in addition to Eurosport.

A nascent rider protest is forming. Morabito is wearing a wet suit. Zabriskie is testing his new winter formula DZ Nuts. The humanity is thick.

Riding at -1 while it's snowing on icy roads.

Yes, I understand Polish now. Excellent preparation for the Tour.

Good training. Tough training grrrrr.

You may find youself racing Galibier/Les deux Alpes on a cold miserable day.
It could happen.
A day like that can make or break a TdF victory.
