I think he's proven he can't do anything else now? A mildly superior Alex Dowsett with a freak result.

For Sky

Monday: Rowe
Tuesday: Puccio
Wednesday: Porte

Tour of Britain starts on Sunday - are we finally building up to the Cavendish reveal?

nah, if cav is going to Sky wouldnt expect an announcement till be made until the final london stage. By then his seasons pretty much done and the worlds are just around the corner.

unless theres too much press attention in which case maybe at the start of the hrace.

the most overrated rider of 2010 and proven that in 2011, useless, pure itt guy
Sky have learned this season to turn mediocre climbers into monsters that annihilate all pre-race favourites, so expect Porte to totally dominate the Giro next year :p

he's also not very explosive if I recall so also not the guy for hilly races.
He was pretty impressive in San Sebastian last year. This season, I don't remember ever seeing him, except in a TT. Oh, and on Willunga Hill.

I was somewhat impressed with the S-B stage at the 10' giro, and of course he had a very good CSS last year. I was more impressed with that.

Anyway I'm not saying he can win ardennes and such, just a better thing to aim for (stages races with hills and itt aka eneco) then GTs where mountains are too much for him.

Good, Porte was a useless domestique anyway. Nowhere to be seen on climbs.

He needs to lose some weight. He's too big. He has potential in week long stage races.

Not such a bad thing Porte isn't going to BMC. He wanted to go to Sky last year. Never wanted to stay at saxo with Riis who is a cold character.

He has openly said he is too big, if you take a look at him he looks a bit flabby for a gc rider. needs to lose some weight.
Wait, so Porte is a stage racer?

For someone who aspires to be a stage racer, definetly. Even though conditions were much different for Porte, he beat Evans' record up Mount Wellington in the Tour of Tasmania. Amongst other results, that is impressive. I am not sure how good he will be but he is certainly an aspiring stage racer.

So he's an aspiring stage racer because he could get decent results in the future, but Pinotti isn't a stage racer because he already got those results?

Stage racer perhaps. But then it would have to be in a week long race with parcours like this years Paris-Nice, and look how he did this year.

In what race was it this year he had to get off his bike to get over a climb?

Also, how much time did he in fact lose in the mountains in last years Giro? 18-19 minutes?

I'm just saying that I think he's massively overrated. Look at this years results. I'm really curious as to what his goals have been. 22nd in Paris-Nice losing 10 minutes in a race that fits him like nothing else? Almost last in Pais Vasco. Almost last in Romandie. Nowhere in the Giro. Nowhere in the Tour.

Also, I'm curious as to how Porte is an aspring stage racer when Martin and Pinotti aren't stage racers:

Because people are continuall ignoring a perfectly valid point. You have pretty much justified my point. He won stage races which were tailor made for him. He won them in the ITT's That's why Martin and Pinotti have results in stage races. They can do a good chrono. Doesn't make them good stage races.

What have Porte shown in stage races besides doing well in the ITT?

I can't understand why teams are signing so many useless and overrated riders. Don't they read this forum?

Porte is a very good signing if they don't try to shoehorn him into the kind of rider he isn't.

... so they still have to check this forum to see what kind of rider he is :)

I do wonder if he hasn't signed some sort of pre-agreement with Sky already last year. On one hand Sky seem to have turned Froome into Wiggins #2 but otherwise they already have enough people who can TT/race the short stage races so a team like GE with a lot less competition would have been better.
