According to portuguese newspaper Record, Bruno Pires (ex-Leopard-Trek) will join Saxo Bank-Sungard LINK

I'd be very happy for him! I think he has a lot of potential and he got to show it a couple of times this year with good performances (9th overall in Colorado Challenge for example). It would be too bad if he had to go back to continental after only 1 year with the pros. I don't know of how much help he would be to Contador because we haven't seen him in a GT yet but I think it's quite a good signing by Riis

If he goes to a GT as Contador helper will be Vuelta. Anyway were Popovych and Rhoregger free?

I don't see saxo weak as supporting team for Contador. I don't know the flat domestiques but at mountains only can be improved with a superdomestique. The TTT is other story but next year is not a problem.

Stijn Devolder has always struck me as a nice guy, I really don't see why alot of the Belgian people on this forum, and outside this forum, dislike him. Is it because he won the Ronde twice and didnt do 'anything' after it?

A friend of mine actually said this, it is because he only races well at two races in the season: the Belgian national RR and the RvV and nothing else. But isnt that just the same as peaking for like a GC in Paris-Nice for example, peak for what suits you best and what you like best?

maybe because he abused the death of his "friend"for his own failing as a professional. I don't think I've seen any lower things then that.

I can't say enough good things about him. I openely admit I'm biased but he was friendly and to the point. He even sent me and e-mail 2 months later to see how I was getting on. Was very forward with me as well. I've met dozen of pros and altough I've never had a chance to spend with the others as I did him he was by far the most likeable. Saying that of all the guys I've met only 1 was less than freindly. GT even asked for my xbox username so he could play me at Gears of solid.

Nice, thanks for sharing man.

I hope stijn can return to winning ways.

thats a very nice story man, i also never understood the devolder hate tbh tho it may be because belgiums simple prefer tom boonen and they know that the 2 wins devolder has are 80% boonen and they think boonen should have those wins on his palmares. i honestly understand them on that :p

It's more that he just says he'll go for GC in Vuelta Tour, but completely fails :p That's what did it for a lot of people I know... I'm still a fan though :)

No need for the captions, I've seen them riding together and it was easy to see they were really good friends. If one of my best friends died I'd have a ****ing hard time as well...

Those are my feelings as well. Specially the last sentence. Although he's not a terrific rider or talent, he got some results I consider interesting for him. He's performance at Colorado and also his top-20 at Dauphiné (by memory).

Also, let's not forget that while in another thread Dominic Klemme's victory on Gp Samyn is talked as an important mark to the team, Pires was a beast that day... working hard to set the pace or just cut the chances of those who tried to get away.

I totally agree with you and I think the suggestion in Ryo's post is really uncalled for. Says a lot more about Ryo and his apparent lack of empathy than about Devolder.

+1. And I think in the circumstances it's rather cretinous to impute otherwise. Personally, my impression of Devolder (and that's all it is, an impression) is that he's one of those proper old-fashioned, hard-working, reflective sort of plattelanders.

He's just an unmanufactured guy who's a bit awkward around the glossier side of the sport in a way that Tommeke and Philbert never have been. He's got a family and a job to do and he has a quiet, bashful sort of pride in his (very few) victories.

Popovych stays with Radioshack, Rohregger is free. He also had a very decent season and I hope he finds a new team!

+1! Nice to see someone else actually saw the race and remembers that. What's even more remarkable is that Samyn wasn't his terrain at all
