I think it will depends on how much Benetton is interested into it.

Benetton should drop the F1 sponsorship and spend all the cash on a grade A Italian cycling team. Excellent opportunity right now.

why? there are no italian top riders anymore and nobody in italy cares about cycling anymore. in the days of pantani and cipo it would've made sense, not anymore. besides benetton are international more than italian

Why not Uran and Henao to Euskaltel. Euskaltel have god riders to preform in Giro/Vuelta but not in the tour and hilly classics. If some Colombian company could help finance it, this could be a good idea. This mean also Euskaltel would get rid of these crappy east-european and form a team with 15-20 basgue riders (perhaps Txurruka back) and the rest of the team occupied with Uran and Henao + some other good colombians. Would love it.

euskaltel have no money and colombian companies won't finance anything except if it's a completely colombian team. gianetti also tried to merge with geox team but colombian sponsors refused

Benetton stopped F1 nearly 10 years ago, I think 2003 was their last year.

Gianetti tried to make a deal with the Venezuelan federadion, didn't he?

And Colombia sponsored a mixed Colombian - Italian team with Savio as far as rember correctly.

Maybe it's not a that bad idea to merge/mix with another/existing WT team and get Uran/Henao with bigger budget, instead of hopless lonely projects like the one with Corti. They could still add the likes of Atapuma, Chaves, Duarte and even Infantino/ Acevedo to that list.

Betancur already is on board with AG2R and Quintana with Moviestar. Would be shame while atm we're getting as much Colombian (climbing) prospect as we had in Italy about 10 years ago, there's no strong Colombian team in the peloton.

That while 10 years ago, where Colombian cycling - except Botero, Cardenas etc - was straight botom out we had Colombia - Sella Italia which at least was strong & present at the Giro during those years.

And as far as I remeber, the deal between Gianetti & Venzuela was cancelled, because they South American had no faith in Gianetti and wanted self-control about the team managment. Can't blame them for that. I won't trust Gianetti & Fernandez either.

that was the national federation, no companies involved and it ended up with a big disaster. savio can never show his face again in colombia... and gianetti tried firts to merge geox with colombian team before he tried venezuela.

a big colombian sponsor doesn't need non colombian riders to get in wt though. uran and henao is enough and there are many hundreds if not more pro's in colombia as well. but you can basiclaly scoop up most of coldeportes and remove corti. and allow the leaders to have riders they want. reason marco corti is riding is because he's best friend of fabio duarte, they could also bring in zanio who is friend of uran. you'd already have over 20 riders

Cost of WT over ProConti is pretty prohibitive, and at the moment they're able to get invites to every race they want to and have been in that position for the last five years, originally with Visconti, then with Pozzato, and now with Gatto in classics, Chicchi in flat races, and Garzelli/di Luca/Santambrogio in stage races. I'm sure they can buy in a couple of decent sized Italian names with enough name recognition to continue that even if some of them leave.

I think for many teams the only thing the WT is good for is a guaranteed Tour invite. Being forced to race in Australia and China makes no sense to most.

If you're Androni or Europcar there's no need as your most likely anyway guaranteed for a wildcard at the most important WT races you want to participate in. For anything else the budget is - luckily - to small.

Although Androni was a bit unlucky to not receive anymore - ASO - Ardennes invites after their solid campagn in 2009. But sadly the've taken a step back anyway this year.

Still they race all important Italian races. So does Europcar in France and BeNeLux. No need for them to participate and struggle at the Giro or Vuelta again. Or in Asia or the USA. They focus on the races they want to participate and justify their wildcard with great panache since beeing no longer PT/WT. Even in Africa. So does Androni since it was founded .....

They should take over Germany's already existing WT team, Argos-Shimano.
