Can losing the Khazak (sp?) market for cycling really be that bad?

But on what grounds? Astana had no scandals this year, how can you pull their license now? You can't use Vino as an excuse after he rode the Vuelta.

Well, a big part of the licenses are team roster and Astana has been stripped bare at the moment so depending on what level of riders they ca nkeep and recruit it may become an issue. I think though that having Contador can compensate for alot in the end but if you take away Contador at the moment there's not alot left in the team.

See Brunyeel's latest blog entry. He's had to fight them to pay his team for more than just this season. How can riders be expected to excel under that sort of management.

There has been little word on Horner, it was first thought he was going to Radioshack(right age profile) but there seems to have been a disagreement somewhere. Personally speaking, I am thinking the upgraded BMC team, seems like a good fit for Horner. Plenty of opportunities to race in the US whilst also doing many of the top European races. Just a hunch.

Horner is a total mercenary and will end up where he is getting paid. judging on his editorial pieces in his hometown newspaper, he sure seems to think that he should be getting top-5 GC grand tour style money based on his form at the Giro this year.

he is worth quite a bit, but you have to think that the GC window is closing (or has closed) on him. i don't think he is worth as much as HE thinks he is, nor do I see any team on the horizon that would build around him for a grand tour.

great form this year, but too far down the career timeline to justify what he seems to want.

Horner has said himself in interviews during telecasts on multiple occasions that he's riding with Lance at RadioShack. He's just added that they are still finalizing details.

While there may be some roadblocks, he seems to have every intention of being on RS next year.

A bad move for Garmin and a good move for Evans

There was a couple of comments in the transfers thread suggesting Garmin should try to sign Evans if they cant get Contador. Garmin have a lot of riders that place high but dont win very often.
Evans would be a bad fit for Garmin to as he is just in the same mould as everyone else in the team and frequently places high but doesn't win much. They need someone that converts. Evans has little marketability so is never going to be able to head a strong team.

In 2008/9 Silence structured the team around him even though it didn't suit their interests because he looked to have a good chance to win the tour de france. Now it is clear that wont happen he is off little value to them they are better to focus on a Belgian rider. If Evans had a good offer I doubt Silence would fight much to keep him.

The best team for Evans would surely be Radioshack. He could be a super domestique in the mountains for Armstrong in the tour de france. Evans doesn't like media attention and Armstrong would certainly take that away from him. He could then be leader at either the Giro or Vuelta with a good team behind him and would have a reasonable chance. Armstrong could teach him how to handle the media and to convert high places into a winning effort.

I doubt Evans would become one of Armstrong's 'boys'..he's too independent to fetch and carry for Lance.

Would not fight much but would charge ALOT of money! If he is not staying with SIL then whoever is hiring him has to find some big dollars, not for him but for SIL.

They would have to come to some major agreements with training schedules and time away from Switzerland/Italy.

Following up on the AST remnants, UCI has declared that it won't allow Vino to become DS. They will withdraw the PT licensewhen that happens. According to Pat, "Vino is a cyclist, and he isn't on the course list to follow a training for DS and managers. It is impossible that he will lead the team", reported in de Telegraaf

Garmin & Evans

I could not see Evans going to Garmin with Van De velde and Wiggins in the same team although I think it is more realistic than him going to Radio Shack. I would not be surprised if Evans completed another year at Silence and then retired. His lack of wins counts againt him but if he was on a French team, the lack of wins would not matter. Christophe Moreau was supposed to be getting paid big dollars for years without results although he had two good wins in the Dauphine.

I think that may have been Evan's problem. He chased the dollars instead of finding the best fitting team plus he had some bad luck with some of his new, high profile team mates turning out to be dedicated dopers. Even when his team management bought some talented climbers it still did not work out in his favour. Evan's big mistake was re-signing his previous contract with Silence. Even if he had to take a pay cut he really had to move on and he did field other offers. I think an Italian team or Katusha would have been the best for Evans but it looks doubtful now.
