I think they expected Mcnulty or Vine to close the initial gap to Paret-Peintre, by the time Van Welder realised it wasn't happening it was too late.

Mcnulty excellent in sharp hilly races but should really work for Vine on Hafeet.

I think Vine looked like he might have been able to go earlier after O'Connor but he wasn't quite sure about his role in support of McNulty, who wasn't having a good finish. ... But Vine now seems to be the clear UAE leader.
