diluca cooperates and gets his time in the penalty box reduced.
diluca announces he'll ride for free.
uci says, 'you can't do that, it's against the rules'.

k. possible the diluca/katusha deal going public was to flush out the uci, and knock juan pelota off the 'landis is a liar, we like our story' podium? might help the novitsky team in court of public opinion, as well as an unwelcomed tickling of the prostate of armstrong's legal team.

while i'm aware this is really stretching beyond conspiracy theory, and is not likely to be the case, i thought it entertaining to ponder for a minute or two.

Seems one could fill a daily calendar with Texas' scams and lies. the author could make up 3 out of 365 day stories, for the readers to recognize as fabricated, to win a nice donation in their name to a yet to be founded charity.

If OJ was a popular joke for years, hope can we not be stuck with Texas jokes until eternity? Unfortunately, anything you say or write seems to only add to his fame and confidence.

I reckon it's more that Di Luca suggested it to Katusha, it wasn't thought through fully before being announced, the UCI told them "No, you can't do that, it's against the rule". But then the UCI had no option but to reveal Armstrong's situation.

Essentially, human error!

I think that we can all agree that Lance most certainly did say that he was riding for Astana with no contract and no salary. So can we end the bickering over that point please?

Warning sign #1. Lance also did this same move, so something fishy is going on.

This is easier to analyze. It's called "getting your story straight" in advance. Something will be hitting the fan down the road, and the UCI was preparing for it. At some point, something will happen and the UCI will say "See, we told you we've always had a rule about contracts and salary". My guess is that some Lance shiite is about to hit the fan, they know it, and UCI is laying down some good excuses as preparation for battle.

I think normally the UCI would cover Armstrong's back and you'd never expect someone to come and ask.

I guess on the DiLuca issue they were cornered and had to make a statement otherwise DiLuca would be riding for free along with every other former doper.

Bizarre. Just bizarre. It's almost unbelievable that Armstrong messed this one up. If he planned on racing salary-free and they wouldn't let him, that's easy - you announce that you can't race for free so you're taking the money and giving it to your charity instead. Easy win. Make a bit of a joke about the bureaucracy of it all, get people on your side.

It's hard not to reach the conclusion that something dodgy was going on. But in the light of some of the other stuff this particular story is pretty small fry.

That's exactly the way it would have been handled by a competent, professional team. Team Armstrong has shown incompetence before though. I'm specifically thinking about all the anticipation they tried to build about releasing the Landis 'blackmail' emails. It wouldn't surprise me if his yes-man entourage never even told him he had to take a salary.

What would be utterly brilliant is if he left everything to The Hog to sort out, and Hog never told him about it and pocketed it himself. Then we'd start seeing the excretia fly :p

Lance didn't "mess this one up". If we remember back to that season, Astana was "supposedly" in some kind of financial pea soup. Riders not getting paid, etc. Contador was getting paid, but non-star riders and team staff were not.

Then Lance comes along. In order to keep the other riders from walking-out, I guess they come up with the idea that Lance is riding for free.
So I wouldn't be surprised if Lance gets put in the dirt once or twice down under. Some guys are gonna be really ****ed.

This is the first time I've seen where the UCI isn't unifying behind Lance. Does this mean they just threw him on the meat hook like Johnny Carbone in Goodfellas?

33.000 is a none-payment for someone like Armstrong.
I think he doesn't even notice such peanuts.

Anyway, I wait for an reation and what was paid or not paid.

But it is clear that 50.000 got to the flood victims.
Follow that, clinic ! Did they really get their money ? :D

Explain why the organization that normally protects him is now issuing statements like the one in VeloNation.

And I'm sorry that you have no sense of humor and resort to hurling insults. I find it... tiresome.

The article says nothing about what he was actually paid. The 33 thousand Euros is mere speculation and has no foundation in this discussion.

There there, don't cry. Eventually you are gonna have to face the fact that you are backing a liar. But try to keep it together, nobody likes to see a grown man cry.

I have no reason for that.
I am backing a great personality and great cyclist. ;)

Nice that you have time for me while you are soaking up the SI newest cover.
Keep the tissues in range.

But when one is a blind devotee', they don't see it as bickering. They see it as just another attempt to bring down their hero.

What excuse can they have for such an obvious double standard? What frakkin' a mess!

I'm not surprised about this new unveiled detail on LA's long record of lies--what I'd like to know is IF Astana ever going to prove it in public? at the same time this news makes me think that because of LA getting a salary from the Kazakhs & doing basically whatever he pleased & molding the team as his liking-and most of all nor allowing Vino to comeback-all those things together caused the "money issue" & the "unpaid salaries" back during the Giro.........

I'd much rather here an Armstrong supporter's viewpoint on this disclosure than more of the same belittling of those that have an opposing opinion. What is your reaction to this news?

Speculation has no foundation in this issue.
