Seems like an odd bit to add to such a dry and formal statement:

Insinuating that Brian Cookson’s son’s employment with Team Sky could have something to do with the decision to grant the TUE is an unfounded allegation which will be dealt with seriously.

26th April, flies back from Tennerife for L-B-L, found to have "suddenly" developed a terrible cold/flu, and is pulled.

29th April, get an "urgent" TUE for Prednisone for asthma/bronchial inflammation,

29th April, starts Tour of Romandie, and rips the legs off all, including ITT World Champion, in the ITT.

Sorry, I see NOTHING "urgent" about the whole thing - it is not like Team Sky had no forewarning of his condition.

If they were happy to pull him for a World Tour one-day race, where they were beyond the cut-off time to substitute him, then shove him in another WT race, (where they could have placed a reserve rider in for him), this time a six-day race in the cold & wet of western Switzerland in early May.

Looks damned stupid of SKY management to me, given that he was already the designated "protected leader" for their TdF, and Romandie is not exactly the most important race for TdF preparation.
Now he looks like the "Froome we all know and love" (thank you Hoggy), four weeks out from the TdF.....

That is probably the best take one can put on the whole thing - I personally think that it was to mask the "Tennerife glow" with enough corticosteroids that the other special stuff got masked with the outrageous high for Prednisone

Christopher Froome’s TUE for oral use of glucocorticosteroids was granted on April 29, 2014 based on duly documented medical history and in compliance with the applicable UCI Regulations and the relevant WADA guidelines. The TUE was granted for a limited period, following the usual procedure.

The process was fully transparent as it is UCI’s policy to systematically record all TUEs on ADAMS. WADA was therefore informed throughout the process.

The UCI wishes to emphasise that under the applicable rules – which are consistent with the WADA Code and the WADA TUE Standard and Guidelines – any rider with the same symptoms as Christopher Froome would have received a similar TUE.

The UCI would like to express its profound disappointment with the speculations that have been made suggesting its President could have any influence on the granting of TUEs. The UCI President and the UCI Administration have absolutely no involvement with decisions on TUEs. Insinuating that Brian Cookson’s son’s employment with Team Sky could have something to do with the decision to grant the TUE is an unfounded allegation which will be dealt with seriously.

I 100% guarantee the reaction will be that everything was done according to the rules.

Who knows. Would guess the former. Knowing what you could be popped for ahead of time? Quite the marginal gain.

Probably. Look, the UCI don't even need to be complicit for this to work. Sky figure out Froome is glowing. They apply for the rush TUE. If they get it, he rides. If not, he's still "suffering from the flu" and is scrubbed. UCI guaranteed to come out and say it's all above board, which it is, technically.

None of it however, explains why a rider with such an "acute" respiratory issue is riding, let along smashing the field.
