Proof if it were needed, that a lot of the cycle journalists are stealing a living - and really are clueless about the sport.

At least the Autosport Awards recognise many disciplines of motorsport; this shows scant regard for anything non-road.

Congrats to Jonas Vingard! Interesting that the one lasting memory we will have of him this is season is when he chased down his teammate to ensure that another teammate won the Vuelta. A reward for fair play?

I remember the stage from the day before more, i.e. when he attacked & took over a minute on his teammates & ensured he jumped from third in GC to second, just behind his teammate in red jersey & decisively ahead of his other teammate.

Good times. Vamos. But then he ran out of birthdays/tributes/whatever to dedicate his wins to so he settled for second.

That would be the truth only if that teammate was glued to his wheel, but both times he chased a teammate, that was not the case, so I'm not so sure what was he going to ensure, other than his own chance for the win.

Anyway, about the Velo, I knew if Van Der Poel is not going to get it, then it would be Vinge. Not a chance they would give it to Pog over him.

It was a very strategic attack indeed.

Because it was lose for lose Roglic after that. Vinge was fine being second in the end. He just didnt want Roglic to win.

Is it really so bad that the award is Road Racing only?
I'm sure there are super successful track riders who weren't considered either.

I should win an award for "most predictable thing ever". My post on page 2:

It'll be Vingegaard.

Simply based on his insane peak in the TdF. His 7 minute gap over Pog is something we've not seen in a very long time & pretty much dwarfs all other performances this year.

As a Roglič fan I'd like to say he'd be in contention if he wins the Vuelta but I somehow doubt it. And considering there's an actual award ceremony this year right on the eve of the Tour 2024 presentation, I read it as a simple 2+2= "the prize goes to the Tour champion".

So it'll be Jonas V.

Of course Vingegaard was going to win. Always. No way he wouldn't. Not with the ceremony being held on the eve of the TdF presentation & the whole affair serving as glorified marketing for ASO's Tour de France 2024 hype (Amaury owns L'Equipe as well, FYI).

Van der poel also deserved to win the award, but let's not forget that vingegaard is also a fair winner. He won tour pays basque, Dauphine, the Tour france and gave the vuelta to kuss.

Yes to everything, except to the bolded. Let's not go there.

Some very tasty Danish rewriting of history would have us believe Vinge was the Mother Teresa of pro-cycling. He only wins for others & he bestows gifts because he's just such a great team player.

Back in the real world it's a bit more complicated, like what was he doing on stage 16? Why was his attack okay yet Rog's wasn't? Why did he follow Rog on stage 17 when Rog didn't follow him on stage 16? So many questions... which most people (especially his fans) have only answered with bias.

The bottom line is he wanted to finish ahead of Rog first & foremost. The rest was just politics.

Fully deserved that the award went to Jonas:hearteyes:. Sad that there are so many in here who cannot recognize the achievements of a top athlete and feel the need to call him a skeleton or comment negatively about him. You're allowed to be disappointed, but straight up trashing a winner who has been chosen by the journalists of the cycling sport is incomprehensible to me
