They didn't give it to Nibali in 2014. Pogacar randomly cracking doesn't make it more dominant. Only one stage win to boot too. Okay maybe it's ridiculous to compare it to Nibali but it was less dominant than Pog in 2021 IMO.

It really looks like they just said "let's pretend Vingegaard also won the Vuelta"
You could argue that Vingegaard crashing in 21, made Pogacar seem more dominant than he otherwise would have.

It doesn't really matter which of those two wins was more dominant, though. The point is that the guy who was so dominant in 21, the guy everyone thought would win the next 10 Tours, is the guy Vingegaard beat this year, in an equally dominant fashion.

Still, MvdP winning 2 monuments and the WCRR and not winning Velo d'Or is just a little sad. It's very unlikely he'll never have a season this good again and I would have loved to see him rewarded with this kind of award.
I guess you mean "It's very unlikely he'll ever have a season this good again" or "It's very likely he"ll never have a season this good again" ?

Sorry for being pedantic but maybe he'll have a new chance next year already if he focusses fully on the Monuments/Olympics combo. Obviously all stars will have to align but he'll probably be top favorite in two/three Monuments and the Olympic RR. Worlds is probably going to be too hard I guess?

So you have to win more than half of the 6 biggest one-day races to win this prize? That's frankly ridiculous in a year without a 2 time GT champion.
Since 2011 (Gilbert monster season)...

Every winner of this prize has either won the TdF or Worlds (RR)... bar 2014 and 2020.

It says a lot.

If we go back to 2000... the only years another rider got it was 2008 (Contador Giro x Vuelta) and 2010 (Cancellara Ronde x PR x Worlds ITT).

I guess we also have to come to terms with that everybody dont follow cycling the way we do on here. TdF and Worlds are the only races some fans see or hear about. The yellow jersey or the worlds rainbows makes for the better picture with the annoncement of the winner.

The worst pick for the winner ever, Alaphilippe in 2019, won neither.

The votes for Mvdp are still going up, so we know who the winner on the forum is. Since the end of the Vuelta, Mvdp has officially been Topcat d'Or and the opinion of a handful of bourgeois journalists is not going to shake that.
Notably, Froome, Rackham and Netserk received no votes.

Didn't Mathieu win the Worlds Road Race?

Of course Vingegaard isn't a popular winner on this forum, I'm surprised he won at all since he's not that popular with journalists either. But if you look at the most impressive performance this season, I think it's hard to look past Vingegaard in the Tour. I think had he won the Vuelta as well there would have been no discussion... and we all know that he could have won the Vuelta.

MVDP would have been deserving as well, but if you criticize Vingegaard for only performing in the Tour (not true, but okay) surely MVDP deserves the same criticism for only performing in a few races. For his palmares it was a wise choice to focus more on his biggest goals, but if you look at the overall more dominant rider, I'd take both Pogacar and Vingegaard over him.

Well Merckx is by far the best one day rider of all time having won 19 monuments and 3 times the World Championships, so from that perspective its makes sense that this award is named after him.

I just hope that this won't be used to reward the best one day rider of every season and the Velo d'Or winner goes to the Tour winner/best stage racer...

That kind of feels how it's started at least :(

Since it is my understanding that the jury is made up of journalists, I expected them to go for the most appealing narrative of the year; I'm a bit surprised that would be Vingegaard, but okay. He had a good year.

Agree with previous posters that the introduction of the Merckx award makes it more difficult for a classics rider to win the Vélo d'Or, so I was hoping for van der Poel, but okay, okay. Hopefully he'll get another chance.

In my opinion, Pogačar had the best season, if wins and podium are both considered, but okay, okay, okay. He got the 2021 award and seems to be happy with his year.

Bitter grumblings/old man (old lady?) yelling at clouds below, because I missed lunch and am hangry:

1) If placements and podiums are _not_ considered and if classics are going to have their own award, then I'm not sure that Vingegaard's season is so superior to Roglič's in terms of stage race wins and GT wins - except that the GT that Vingegaard won was the TdF.

2) If winning the Tour is all that matters, one could argue that Pogačar should have won the award in 2020. I wouldn't argue that, but one _could_.

Vingegaards season getting a bit underrated in here. Tour victory and 2nd (gifted) in Vuelta isn't as common as people make it out and he annihilated everyone in Basque and Dauphine (some of the biggest winning margins in a while) which are right up there amongst the most prestigious one week races.
Yes, I would've also given it to MVDP because it's also a bit of a sad message to one day specialists if you don't win it with such palmares in 12 months but it's not as outrageous as some are making it seem. It's not Vingegaards fault that no one deems his competition in Basque, Dauphine and Tour (Pogacar injured blabla) as worthy.

Also bonus points for him not even showing up hahaha.
