You could argue that Vingegaard crashing in 21, made Pogacar seem more dominant than he otherwise would have. They didn't give it to Nibali in 2014. Pogacar randomly cracking doesn't make it more dominant. Only one stage win to boot too. Okay maybe it's ridiculous to compare it to Nibali but it was less dominant than Pog in 2021 IMO.
It really looks like they just said "let's pretend Vingegaard also won the Vuelta"
He was literally the best he's ever been. Except for the day he bonked, his numbers were better than the previous three years.Pogacar wasn't at this best due to his fall in Liege. Roglic wasn't there. Evenepoel wasn't there. Then it's "easy" to win dominantly.
I guess you mean "It's very unlikely he'll ever have a season this good again" or "It's very likely he"ll never have a season this good again" ?Still, MvdP winning 2 monuments and the WCRR and not winning Velo d'Or is just a little sad. It's very unlikely he'll never have a season this good again and I would have loved to see him rewarded with this kind of award.
Since 2011 (Gilbert monster season)...So you have to win more than half of the 6 biggest one-day races to win this prize? That's frankly ridiculous in a year without a 2 time GT champion.
I don't understand what you mean by this.If he was so easy to dominate, why did he easily finish ahead of everyone else?
What more could Tony Martin do in 2011 and 2013? What a grave injustice that he didn't win those years. Not similar. Like Gilbert said, what more can MVDP do? He was the best at the most important races against the best at their best. Same can’t be said about Vingegaard
Sure, that's the same, comparing TT with road racing. What a weak argumentWhat more could Tony Martin do in 2011 and 2013? What a grave injustice that he didn't win those years.
The worst pick for the winner ever, Alaphilippe in 2019, won neither.Since 2011 (Gilbert monster season)...
Every winner of this prize has either won the TdF or Worlds (RR)... bar 2014 and 2020.
It says a lot.
If we go back to 2000... the only years another rider got it was 2008 (Contador Giro x Vuelta) and 2010 (Cancellara Ronde x PR x Worlds ITT).
I guess we also have to come to terms with that everybody dont follow cycling the way we do on here. TdF and Worlds are the only races some fans see or hear about. The yellow jersey or the worlds rainbows makes for the better picture with the annoncement of the winner.
He still couldn't be bothered to show up at the ceremony & claim the reward though.

This is what I fear. Let's say Pogacar wins the Tour and 2 monuments. Does he get both? Why not best sprinter, stage racer and TTist, too?I just hope that this won't be used to reward the best one day rider of every season and the Velo d'Or winner goes to the Tour winner/best stage racer...
I think Landis had already been stripped of his title at that point.Looking back at previous Velo d'Or results I noticed that Landis 2006 and Vingegaard 2022 are the only tour winners who did not make the top 3. That's quite a big insult to Jonas and perhaps the voting panel was conscious of that when making their decision this year.
Well Merckx is by far the best one day rider of all time having won 19 monuments and 3 times the World Championships, so from that perspective its makes sense that this award is named after him.
I just hope that this won't be used to reward the best one day rider of every season and the Velo d'Or winner goes to the Tour winner/best stage racer...
I think the manner in which he won those stage races mattered.1) If placements and podiums are _not_ considered and if classics are going to have their own award, then I'm not sure that Vingegaard's season is so superior to Roglič's in terms of stage race wins and GT wins - except that the GT that Vingegaard won was the TdF.
Most of the cycle journalists aren't too bright, and this is what you get. PFP with the obligatory award for a MTB rider......Since it is my understanding that the jury is made up of journalists, I expected them to go for the most appealing narrative of the year; I'm a bit surprised that would be Vingegaard, but okay. He had a good year.
But... French rider having great TdF and riding in yellow. The worst pick for the winner ever, Alaphilippe in 2019, won neither.

Strongest field of contenders in a long time. I couldn't argue against Vingegaard, he's a freakishly good GT rider, but as a fan of the sport and not just the Tour, I was more impressed with MvdP.
