If he has to race that instead of Il Lombardia it's time for him to pound his fist on the table or go to another team.

Or have Vino bribe the UCI to change the dates for the Tour of Almaty so he can go there after he got second in Il Lombardia after Contador

It's pretty obvious to me that he's not been training properly lately, so I guess he wouldn't be a factor in Lombardy anyway. I'm not particularly convinced that this decision has been taken behind his back...

Exactly what I was wondering, too. He maybe let his form go again in a big way like last winter. Well, it is disappointing from a fan's perspective :( But if true, it would explain the decision to not ride Lombardia :(

*sigh* maybe its something else?

because he would never be the favourite there anyway, he can just hope for a miracle and if he fails who cares.

Italy better go there without a captain if that's the case. Stay under the radar and hope for a surprise move from Trentin or De Marchi. A not in shape Nibali is of no use.

Or just make up their team out of the most attacking riders they have (Nibs, Pirazzi, Di Marchi, etc.), and proceed to p!ss off every other country for the next 255 kilometers. :p

I think it would work.

It could be pure strategy tho. Nibali is an already established rider and even the riders that are most skeptical about his form for the Worlds still think of him like a possible danger. So announcing Nibali as the team leader can attract all the others' attention to him, while keeping the real deal under the radar and ready to pounce.

I hope Pirazzi makes the team, i like Aru but i don't think that he would be very useful on a course like this. Trentin could be a darkhorse, if he's in decent shape

Contador and Saxo sandbagging Nibali was not cool. He will teach them a lesson next year and i can't wait for that.

AC is famous for his disingenuousness. I don't think any pro rider takes AC's words seriously any more.

I believe what they mean by sandbagging is Contador being disingenuous about his form and intentions for the Vuelta.

Now...where the idea that he was doing this to Nibali comes from...I do not know.

Well is PR strategy... you have to distract your rivals and put the pressure on them always, would be stupid to say "Yes I have super form and I will attack in the stage 7-8-11-12-13 etc." and he is good doing that... He is always putting pressure on their rivals and downplaying his chances.
