Teams & Riders Vincenzo Nibali discussion thread

Are people blasting him for crying at the finish? That's like blasting an olympic medallist for crying on the podium. He cried because of everything he has been through this Giro: Media pressure and criticism; the death of the young guy who died 2 weeks ago; and winning in such style. Crying for me is always a good sign. It shows they are not robots but humans. I know for sure I would've cried.

Yeah and the kid also personally knew Nibali and his family well.

At least, on Sporza the commentators said Vincenzo's father treated the boy like another Nibali. IIRC they also said the boy came to visit Nibali earlier in the Giro......

Apologies if this is a silly question, but what kid died 2 weeks ago?

A rider from his junior team. Vincenzo was really suffering from it. You could see yesterday how emotional he got after the line. The kid was like a little brother to Vincenzo. The kid was very close to Vincenzo's family.

I meant last year's crying that Astana is evil to him. Also true champion attacking leader of the race when he has mechanical and lying he didn't see that... Crying and blaming Froome causing fall... This is crying I meant, not crying because someone dear died, that's of course understandable.

Nibali also crashes on descents and luckily for him it has never cost him a race of the ones I have seen.
Firenze?

Anyway, I need to eat my words. I thought he was done. Epic comeback.
Now he must be the favorite for the jersey.

Don't really get why people blast him for crying after the finish.

I forgot about Firenze. Well it seems everyone was crying for different reasons ! So what if he cries. He probably thought his race was finished as well. It's impossible to call the result of this race until the end of the final stage. There have been so many twists and the only consistent performance was from SK who crashed. Whether Nibali can break Chaves again today remains to be seen and I think SK will go backwards unless he can put in a superhuman performance with the injuries he has. He might abandon. Sometimes riders can push through the pain barrier but his morale must be down.

That's whining, not crying. He never physically cried IIRC. And his complaints against Astana were completely legitimate.

Agree or disagree but I think that if he wins this giro it will make him a legend. Maybe not the kind of legend Hinault or Mercx is, because they were simply more successful, but this comeback would not be forgotten soon. I know it is only because of Kruijswijks crash and ofc I feel extremely sad for him, but it's Kruijswijks own fault, and of all the riders who didnt crash Nibali was by far the strongest.

And when we have the 200th giro and Cyborg Eshnar will make another giro route out of the most rememberable giro stages so far this stage also has a chance to be part of it. ;) :D
i just don't like riders who win races in downhill, just as when i didn't like savoldelli

i see them as crazy madmen who put their life and their colleagues life on the line (because htey have to follow if they want to win). I rather see a strongest climber win then a downhill madmen

The point of racing is getting as fast as you can drom point A to point B. It includes both ascents and descents. It requires bike handling skills, concentration, good decisions, teammates etc. A bit of luck is also great because it creates all the unpredictability we love.

If you want to be sure that strongest climber is gonna win you'll have to design a GT with 21 mountain time trials.

VN is both: a great climber and a great descender...that's who wins GTs (sprinkle in a little TT and hiding from the wind too). Plus, VN wasn't really hanging it out yesterday. He and EC weren't even close to the limits.

What was legitimate about that?

Astana last year treated him quite badly.

Deserved it at the end. Of course he wasn't the strongest in the giro but Kruijswijk his own fault for crashing, he only has himself to blame.

When you give a chance like that to one of the big 4, they will take it gladly.

Congrats
