Didn't he just follow Schlecks on the way to Grand Bornand?
But you're right about Grossglockner, for some reason I remembered him attacking a lot later than he actually did. My bad.
He followed the great Rujanito _O_ ;) :p

That was zoncolan I think, he attacked 2 km from the finish? Something like that.

He attacked on the Grand bornand stage and dropped Frandy and Kloeden cracked and JB didn't like that

The nibali from thsi giro is miles better than the rider who won the vuelta, much stronger fields now too.

Indeed, he has progress incrementally and nicely since Giro 2010.

If he manages this win that is a Vuelta and a Giro in the win column, plus a podium at Le Tour. Not bad for a so called 2nd rate rider :D

Nobody calls him second rate, he's just not in the same league as Froome and Alberto

Nibali is 28, he probably won't progress all that much anymore.

He can in the TT, just like Purito has at 32. And it is the TT that will get him more wins :)

That has been said for 2 years now, but every year Nibali emerges just a little bit better, either in the mountains or in the tt. ;)

Normal cyclists reach their prime when they're 29-30-31 years old. Not when they're 26.

Nibali =/= Purito. Nibali was born as a GC rider, Purito is too light to be consistent enough during a GT. He didn't even bother about his TT position until a few years ago.

I know you love robbie williams and in one of his song he said " you cant lie to a lier because of all the lies" :D :p ...well, point being, he was called second rate in this very thread (not saying i agree or disagree)

I remember myself saying he doesn't belong in the same category as Alberto and Dawg iow "first rate" according to the other poster. I don't like to speak about first rate and second rate. There are much more categories.

Zam I hope you're drunk :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULTtWUZhD9c

So he got a couple of years still to become better then ;)

Yes, but not much better I believe. I think riders progress most when they're 25-26-27 years old.

Nope, that's in the U23. A friend of mine, who is 19, improves his PR's every month or so. As soon as you become pro in the elite levels, you acclimatise to that and gain experience, progressing even more.

From then on(older than 25-26) it's just marginal progress though, except if you're unrightfully pushed into a domestique role, or become pro at a somewhat later age.

Well that is stupid, so Froome is 1th rate, AC is 1.1th rate and Nibbles is 1.3th rate?

WE NEED A NEW SYSTEM GUYS!!!

For those who didn't get it:

MY POINT:

According to vino attacks everyone's first-second rate system, Nibali is up there with Froome and Contador, just like Quintana, Rodriguez and others. I don't agree. But I don't think he belongs in the second rate category, with Scarponi, Rolland and VDB, either. IMO he and Rodriguez, Valverde etc belong somewhere in between. That's why I said that I don't like the first-second rate system.

Okay, I wasn't sure, thanks for explaining this.

And after Purito worked his TT he became a GT rider :)

Nibs can still improve his TT, position and power on the flats. Until he does that he will be distinctly disadvantaged against the likes of Froome, AC and even Wiggins. But he can take Wiggins on the climbs and descending...not so the other 2.

Agreed. No one doubts that Nibali is a strong stage racer though. Just not as strong as some make him out to be. For example people saying (although jokingly) that he will certainly win Vuelta, WC, Lombardia this year and TDF next year, it's a bit too much for me.

Alberto has already been in such a position before and still attacked, Froome we don't know of course but he does seem to like stamping his dominancy all over a race.

Nibali winning all those races was always said in a joking manner, only the most hardcore Nibali fans actually believe he'll win all those.

But Contador only did that when he was in invincible form, In other races (Tour 2010, Vuelta 2012) he has ridden more conservatively while in the leaders jersey.
