"It was an explosive time trial, compared to the specialists I defended myself quite well. My speed was good, there were tricky and slippery corners, but I tried to do well without risking too much. Even yesterday on a finish not suitable for me, I tried to defend myself. The rest of the Giro? First of all, I need to be in good shape, there are riders who are more highly rated than me: I've already explained what my ambitions are for this Giro, I've always given my best in the third week so I'm confident...."

Part of me worries extra now that he'll be tempted to chase 5th on GC instead of going for stage wins and KoM or something.

That said he took a chunk of time out of Valverde today and that's all that matters

Etna will be fine, we'll see after Blockhaus. Something tells me he will still be in the mix.

well you know, etna and blockhaus aren't menaces to nibali, others merely have adapted to them, but the Bag Man was molded by them

Martinelli:

"The important thing is that Vincenzo Nibali rides with serenity, taking the race day by day. The designated captain is Lopez. He has always done great things in the mountains. This Giro, with little time trial and a lot of mountains, will surely be won by a climber, and he is one".

"With Vincenzo I have spoken very often and he has understood perfectly. If he will be able to ride with great serenity, I am sure that we will see a great Nibali at this Giro".

Salvatore Nibali, dad:

"At Astana he has been reborn and is back to having fun. The riders never tell the truth. I've seen Vincenzo training in Milazzo before the Giro and he's prepared very well. He will surprise us."

The stage is set. There is no Nibali win without opposition spectacularly imploding in winning position. Simon Yates shall be the sacrificial lamb.

The finishing argument. Nibali is clearly aging better than Valverde
