I think UAE played well yesterday. They eliminated everyone bar Van Gills and transformed this race in Wellens and Sivakov vs Van Gills. Today, they cracked him and played the card numbers and it worked. They sacrificed a stage win for the GC. They did the right thing IMHO.

It's a shame we didn't see more of the stage today, but from the updates it's clear that they went on the offensive from the first km. And it paid off with a great situation as the coverage started, but worth keeping in mind that if Van Gils had been able to hold the wheel of Pidcock over the top of the climb, he would have been in an excellent situation to win the race with Wellens dropped and 7" on Sivakov from the first stage.
